TECHNICAL PRESENTATIONS FOR EE STUDENTS

TECHNICAL PRESENTATIONS
FOR GRADUATING EE STUDENTS
(10th IIEE Region 7 Conference)

ELECTRICAL CODES & STANDARDS

ELY P. SILVOSA, Jr., PEE
VP Internal – IIEE NORTH CEBU CHAPTER

The electrical engineer can’t just design systems without conforming to standards…
----------------------------------------------------------------

Designing Electrical Systems for industrial or commercial complexes requires a working competence on the Electrical Code of the country and other related Electrical Standards. Fundamental rules and standards are needed to ensure safety to persons and properties from the hazards arising from the use, misuse, abuse & misapplication of electricity. That is the intent of any Electrical Code, the IEEE Recommended Practices and the IEC Design Guide, among other publications.

On the other hand; electrical devices, components, equipment and other products are manufactured within the framework of some international standards. Compliance to these standards along with proper maintenance will result to electrical systems relatively free from hazards. But what are the leading international electrical standards?

This presentation aims to discuss the roles of Codes and International Standards that are relevant in the practice of electrical engineering. It gives insights how various standards influence the design and execution of any electrical project.

GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANTS IN THE VISAYAS

MOTOR CIRCUITS & APPLICATION

ERNESTO B. ABUNDA, Jr., PEE
Former IIEE NORTH CEBU CHAPTER PRESIDENT

The myriad of motors in an industrial plant appears to be mind-boggling, but not a mystery!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Motors account 70% - 80% of the total load of an industrial plant and their control systems may be simple or complicated. How to design the power circuits of the myriad of motors in an industrial plant appears to be mind-boggling, but not a mystery! In fact, it is as simple as everyone should think.

In practically all plants, manufacturing processes always change as a result of product changes where sets of process equipment are acquired from event to event resulting to motors that are connected here and there or transferred from one feeder circuit to another. Sooner or later, a plant electrical engineer wakes up one morning to realize that overload conditions had occurred. Fuses keep on blowing off or circuit breakers always tripping, to the point that such overloads result to conductor melting and a fault occurs!

The engineer therefore being the technical guy has the moral obligation in making his system safe and reliable. We need some fundamental rules – and those rules happen to be, yes the Electrical Code.

GEOTHERMAL POWER DISPATCHING
& MARSHALLING

SIMEON P. GO, Jr., PEE
President – IIEE Ormoc Chapter 2009
Manager – Transmission & Dispatch Department
ENERGY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

How is geothermal power in the Visayas marshaled, controlled and dispatched in real life?
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The mission of any power marshalling management is to operate and maintain effectively the high voltage switchyards and transmission line systems vital to the continuous and optimum transmission and dispatch of electric energy from the interconnected power generating sources to the power grid.

This presentation henceforth aims to cover: a) Overview of the Visayas Grid, b) The Visayas System Power Flow & Interconnections, c) Marshalling Station & Transmission Components, and, d) Power Dispatch & Communication Flow, among others.

SUBSTATIONS & DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS
IN ELECTRIC COOPERATIVES

AL MAHATANI V. LEBUMFACIL, PEE
Technical Consultant - CEBECO I, II & III

Electric Cooperatives’ role in nation-building cannot be underestimated…
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The impact of Electric Cooperatives in electrifying the entire country cannot be underestimated. It brought hope, progress and the amenities of life into the once dark environs of the countryside.

Bringing light and power to the countryside basically needs substations as the first step. This presentation is therefore prepared to orient the student delegates on what to expect of power substations commonly installed by distribution utilities, with a brief discussion on the most common and essential substation components.

It will also discuss how power is distributed from the substation down to the doorstep of homes via 13.2 kV lines and distribution transformers.

NON-DESTRUCTIVE MAINTENANCE TESTING

ROLAND C. ALCOS, REE
Area Manager for Visayas – SPECTRUM SCIENTIFIC CORP.
Director – IIEE NORTH CEBU CHAPTER

Technology is helping reduce the costs of maintenance by using non-destructive testing techniques…
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Every company is dependent on some types of assets that keep the business in business – be it a computer, a centrifuge, switchgear or a power transformer. In a large enterprise, reducing costs related to asset maintenance, repair, and ultimate replacement is at the top of management concerns. Downtime ultimately results not only in high repair costs but in customer dissatisfaction.

Maintenance includes methods to predict or diagnose problems in a piece of equipment based on trending of test results. These methods use non-intrusive testing (non-destructive) techniques to measure and evaluate equipment performance trends. It takes advantage of proven cause-symptom-effect relationships to predict the need for corrective action.

This presentation will therefore give the student participants a taste of what it is like in the real world maintenance.
