THE GREATEST TRILOGY THAT WENT PFFFTT!

My crystal ball faltered… at least partially.

RECALLING MY VISION

In my last article, I wrote:

“In this third fight, Juan Manuel Marquez would kiss the floor for the fifth time – and this will happen in the fifth round of this Sunday’s event. Expect Marquez to get up quickly and by pride mix it up more fiercely to get even. By the sixth round, the pride of Mexico would be floored again – the sixth time around. Marquez would then get up by reflex but only to spastically do the Kentucky Chicken Bambolero. Marquez would quiver in confused vertigo and would fall again to the floor…"

But then,

“The sixth flooring is just a dream. It is just a vision to express the excitement of the fight. The tension of ambiguity as an element prior to a mega-fight motivates suspense which in turn fires up the imagination. Thus, once and for all, this trilogy must end the insanity. This time there should be a knock – out! Whether Marquez or Pacquaio owns it, it doesn’t matter anyhow, anymore.”

NOW: There was no fifth or sixth flooring. There was no knock-out. But it doesn’t matter anymore and the insanity lingers on.

"In the sixth round, the end is near… or a ‘near death’ so to speak. For three minutes, Marquez had to be revived. A worried Medical Team at his side, and like Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez could have not understood why he was in the Wonderland.”

NOW: In reality, nothing of that sort happened. But there really was a ‘near death’ albeit not on the ring. The ‘near death’ refers to the 'Pinoy Pride Chicken' when the Pacman lost the fight. But it was the same ‘near death’ resurrected to life by two judges when Michael Buffer barked “By majority decision…, Still … the WBO Welterweight Champion of the World!” … Huh?

Not really – me and my friends watching the screen disagreed. Not even the facial expression of Pacquaio or of his corner men were in agreement. Not even the foreign commentators were happy.

Unbelievable, isn’t it…? Meanwhile, for the first time, no one had the appetite to feast on the food and the chilled canned SMB we waited to partake until the afternoon. Now for the first time, there were left-overs, lots of them.

. . . . .

Then, as my lines went on:

“Marquez has a much better jab than Pacquaio’s.”
“The Mexican is more accurate in his shots.”
“The left uppercuts and the overhand rights are always hitting targets.”
“Efficiency? Marquez gets the upper hand.”
“Ability to recuperate? Marquez had displayed this quality in two of their fights.”
“Intelligence? Marquez to me is more technical.”
“Discipline? Marquez has a finer ear to listen to his Coach.”
“Technology? There’s Nacho Beristain and Miguel Angel Heridia.”

NOW: Yes, the actual flat screen showed it. And to add:

Marquez was fresher, faster and stronger while Pacquaio looked slower and weaker.

Marquez had his combinations hitting targets while Pacquaio retrogressed to his ancient right-left combo that missed most of the time.

Marquez showed more energy at 38, while on the contrary the younger Pacquaio seemed disconnected when it was supposed to be his prime.

Marquez displayed angles while Pacquaio appeared amateurishly back to his one-dimensional style.

Marquez was masterful in executing his fight plan, while Pacquiao faltered almost all night.

Most of all, Marquez schooled Pacquaio on how to perform an intelligent fight.

In this part; my crystal ball saw it correctly…

"Sorry guys but in the previous two fights, Pacquiao against Marquez was too predictable, hittable and one-dimensional. Marquez, the counter-punching expert on the other hand, created opportunities to fit to his advantage – most of the time alluding sideways making Manny miss too many by hairlines. And when Manny’s missiles missed, he over-travelled and then Juan Manuel’s counterpunches slung-shot back to swarm Manny’s head and body."

NOW: Exactly, this actually what did happen. Pacquiao against Marquez this time was still too predictable, hittable and one-dimensional. No wonder why Marquez shifted his body from frontal to sideways making Pacquaio miss. The left straights were perfectly eluded several times by simply ducking to let-through Pacquaio’s whizzing darts. And Marquez posting himself within range, fires back not one but combos of lethal bombs. The combos were overwhelming that not even the vaunted Pacman’s whirlwind blows and footwork could not be found. Nice execution of a homework. Amazing, why the exchange of roles?

Marquez must have rehearsed these traps to perfection. Visibly, Marquez was more prepared and psyched than Pacquaio.

For this part, my prediction tool was right.

"On the other hand, Pacquiao now is no longer one-dimensional. He no longer over-travels when in attacking mode nor clumsy when backpedalling. More in fluidity, he had metamorphosed into a tornado with too many angles to twist instantly at the command of his instincts. Manny now is less hittable, slicker and above all, wiser."

NOW: I was wrong again… Now we know that I should have referred the above to Marquez not Pacquaio.

"Watch out Juan. With a body now heavier, denser and thicker, Manny had evolved into an Abrams tank. With a new armor, the bombs of Cotto, Clottey and Margarito were just to be swallowed. And the fire power, speed and new technology; these would become Juan’s biggest headache."

NOW: Hehehe, my crystal ball faltered once more. Again, the reverse was true - it was Marquez who showcased a new armor, new firepower, new speed and new technology.

. . . . . . .

"Pacquaio on paper may be stronger, bigger and faster, but Marquez is the KRYPTONITE of the Filipino Superman. He has the formula to defeat Manny. Marquez in fact is a puzzle that Coach Freddie Roach has to unbundle."

NOW: This time, my crystal ball saw it right.

OPEN-ENDED INSANITY

JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ conquered Pacquaio twice. Why twice?

The first one was a draw – and I agreed to it. The second, it was Marquez. This time, again Pacquaio lost it. Don’t get me wrong, that’s according to my book. I am supposed to be entitled to it.

The war designed to finish the unfinished ended with more questions than answers. The first Unfinished Business was a controversial draw, the second fight was arguable and this fight just turned out to be more notorious. A fourth fight? That’s for the houseflies.

Insanity? Yes? Craving for answers, the supposed answers to finish the unfinished is still unfinished business! Ah, talking of business, this could be it. I’ll touch on this later…

To be honest, my own score card shows a 116 – 113 for Marquez. In the end, my notes bared three rounds for the Dynamite over the Pacman. Where did I err? Amir Khan, Pacquaio’s sparring buddy & friend, while commentating in a UK television said, “Marquez must have won”. The American PPV commentators midway in the fight, quipped the words, “frustration”, and “desperation” on the part of Pacquaio. Freddie Roach himself was overheard saying to Pacquaio as “you are behind”.

Ronnie Nathanielz, in his interview with ABS-CBN said that Ed Tolentino, Tony Aldeguer, Bruce MacTavish, together with him saw the fight for Marquez. Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated’ scored it 116-112 for Marquez. Dan Rafael, espn.com boxing writer and sports commentator, and Kevin Iole, who writes for Yahoo, for their part, thought the bout should have ended in a draw. And there are more in PACLAND website where talking against the Pacman is a taboo, wrote and commented the same perception?

COMPUBOX STATS?

Some boxing pundits percieved that Compubox Statistics won’t lie. Compubox numbers favored Pacquaio, fine. But then, if the same argument has to be used, then why Marquez did not win in the second fight when Marquez was winning by Compubox figures? (See my article dated March 18, 2008 in this blogsite).

The unofficial Compubox is not all computerized. Men assigned specific to the boxers push buttons when they see a boxer hits the opponent. The computer merely counts the points. Same as the judges, the men pushing the buttons may err in their judgments. For instance, a power punch partially blocked gets still a full point the moment the button is pressed. There is no one-half point, I suppose. Hence, lapses and subjectivity are still there.

As Filipinos, we root for Pacquaio - that’s a fact not to be taken from us. Pacquaio had brought many good things to the country. But we also have honor and dignity. In my opinion, the most that could happen is a draw. But a 116–112 verdict for Pacquiao by one judge is overly ridiculous.

To most Filipinos, winning must be accompanied with honor.

WHAT HAPPENED TO PACQUAIO?

He came less prepared?

Why, when he trained for eight weeks? This is two weeks longer than his usual six weeks. Over-training? Maybe yes, maybe not.

But then it was very visible that his timing was off, his combinations missing the point, his reflexes & movements sluggish than usual, the angles of attack weren’t there; oftentimes clumsy in his defense, very much hittable even in an obvious double jab, and most all, had no cure for the ambushing counter-combinations of Marquez.

Why all these? Were they not anticipating Marquez moves? Was he not prepared to deal with Marquez’s counteroffensives when all these were obvious? If this is the case, then Pacquaio came in less prepared. Maybe yes, maybe not.

He no longer is hungry?

Pacquiao now is King, the Boss. He is now a Congressman. The man known as the singer, movie actor, basketball player, father, husband, lover, leader, writer, politician and not just a world champion boxer but the world’s top pound-for-pound boxer rolled into one.

His wishes are everybody’s commands.

What else can you ask for?

Comfort Zone? Maybe yes, maybe not.

For the money? Maybe yes. Win or lose, the 22 million dollars beckon.

He no longer is a good listener?

In a team game like Boxing, we need good coaches and good pupils too. Something like ‘brains & brawns’ stuff. The Coach must be a figure to be trusted, respected and be looked up – that’s why he is the ‘coach’. If the pupil (who incidentally is the Boss) starts ‘not to believe’ in the coach anymore, it’s useless then to prolong the marriage. After all, in the boxing world; the coaches are just part of the pupil’s payroll.

Grapevines have it that Pacquaio himself devised his own training regimen. Is it the reason for the leg cramp? Is it the reason why his performance in this fight seemed to retrogress back to his ancient techniques? The thing is, he might have over-trained himself. He might have peaked too early.

WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN

What goes up must come down. Pacquiao has been winning fights in a long streak. Pacquiao is undefeated in seven years; in a 14-bout winning streak over the biggest names in boxing and now world champion in eight weight divisions.

How much threshold can a once diminutive Pacman gobble up & swallow more than he can chew in the Boxing Sport?

Now he might have forgotten how it is like to lose. He might be in the cloud nine of the false wisdom of invincibility. As I said in my previous article, he has already been on top of the world. Intoxicatingly powerful in such a mood, is Manny taking Marquez lightly? Maybe yes, maybe not.

BUSINESS IS BUSINESS

Is Pacman’s house in danger of caving in? Is the marriage between Pacquaio and his Coaches now ripe for termination? Maybe.

However, there is still the last mega fight lurking in the corner - Pacman Vs. Mayweather. Everybody is talking about it; even Coach Roach joined the fray. That could be the reason why Pacman must win over Marquez because a Marquez win will dissolve the salivation of the mega fight.

One more fight! The mega dollars is temptingly awesome!

And after all these, it doesn’t matter anymore. Coach Roach must have already been rich by then. Ariza could have now amassed dollars of his won. So, it doesn’t matter anymore. Parting ways? Yes. Retirement for Roach? Why not?

How about Pacquaio? Yes. After this last mega fight, win or lose; he has heaps to squander. For how long?

History will judge it. Who knows? It might not take long.

NEAR DEATH ON THE 6TH FLOORING…?

THE SIXTH FLOORING

Pacquaio floored Marquez four times in the past.

In this third fight, Juan Manuel Marquez would kiss the floor for the fifth time – and this will happen in the fifth round of this Sunday’s event. Expect Marquez to get up quickly and by sheer pride mix it up more fiercely to get even.

By the sixth round, the pride of Mexico would be floored again – the sixth time around. Marquez would then get up by reflex but only to spastically do the Kentucky Chicken Bambolero. Marquez would quiver in confused vertigo and would fall again to the floor. Tony Weeks then would wield his hands to signal “It’s Over”!

Again, I say; I have seen it in Darchinyan, then Montiel. This time a fake left straight by Pacquiao would entice Marquez to do a tremendous right straight counter shot only to be smashed by an ambushing Manila Ice to the side of the chin.

That’s it, as I’ve seen it in my crystal ball. In the sixth round, the end is near… or a ‘near death’ so to speak. For two minutes, Marquez had to be revived. A worried Medical Team at his side, and like Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez could have not understood why he was in the Wonderland.

SETTLING THE ISSUE

The previous fights revealed the strengths and weaknesses of both warriors. It was clear that the unfinished business in the two previous fights ended up unfinished. My article on the second fight said that Marquez won that episode. I was not alone; the fact many international figures shared the same perception. Even Filipinos Nonito Donaire and Sev Sarmenta (if I still have the memory), two of the three commentators of ABS-CBN team covering the fight had Marquez winning by a squeaker.

Now this third fight becomes personal to both. Both camps prepared for an unforgiving knock-out. And the madness as to who is the better fighter must be settled.

Thus, once and for all, this trilogy must end this insanity. This time there should be a knock – out! Whether Marquez or Pacquaio owns it, it doesn’t matter anyhow, anymore.

That makes this fight very exciting. Both protagonists have the capability of knocking each other out. Pacquaio on paper may be stronger, bigger and faster, but Marquez is the kryptonite of the Filipino Superman. He has the formula to defeat Manny. Marquez in fact is a puzzle that Coach Freddie Roach has to unbundle.

Remember, style wins fights. Style – that’s it, two contrasting styles. That makes the difference.

THE PREVIOUS FIGHTS

I reviewed the second fight and I'm still convinced that Marquez won it. Had it not been for the third round knock down, Manny could not have a justifiable edge in any of the judges’ wits.

Sorry guys but in the previous two fights, Pacquiao against Marquez was too predictable, hittable and one-dimensional. Marquez, the counter-punching expert on the other hand, created opportunities to fit to his advantage – most of the time alluding sideways making Manny miss too many by the hairlines. And when Manny’s one-arm missiles missed, he over-travelled and then Juan Manuel’s counterpunches slung-shot back to swarm Manny’s head and body.

Manny Pacquaio’s style of volume punching somehow negates Marquez’ points but Manny was not really that overwhelming or dominating. Pacquaio (should I say), allowed Juan Manuel to score because he had to shoot his own darts which turned out to become the key to Juan’s chances.

THE STRATEGIES

This still I believe will be Marquez’s fight plan for this Sunday’s fight. Buoyed with some successes in the past experiences, Juan Manuel will elect to do the same strategy. Compared to the other great boxers who looked mediocre against Pacquiao, what made Marquez’ style effective is that he is not afraid to be hit by Pacquiao’s power. Unlike Clottey or Mosley, Juan Manuel is willing to mix it up, ‘no matter what’ – although in the process, got four trips to the canvas.

What Juan lacks is his own power to knock down Pacquaio. And he knew, it is his missing link. He had hit Pacquiao intensely several times in the past, but the Filipino’s head was too hard to crack. Not even Cotto, Margarito, Dela Hoya could do it. Marquez had already the formula to beat Pacquaio, but he needs that much power. That’s why he strived to grow big, strong and powerful. Now he is confident of being big. He had just announced to the world that he will knock-out Pacquaio. Hmmmm…

THE REALITIES

On the other hand, Pacquiao now is no longer one-dimensional. He no longer over-travels when in attacking mode nor clumsy when backpedalling. Watch out Juan! With a body now heavier, denser and thicker, Manny had evolved into an Abrams tank. With a new armor, the bombs of Cotto, Clottey and Margarito were just to be swallowed. And the fire power, speed and the new technology of the Abrams Tank - these would become Juan’s biggest headache.

Technology? The technology behind is Roach and Ariza. Coach Freddie surely has now invented new tools, new traps and new surprises. We’ll focus on them comes the fight night.

THE THRILL OF THE FIGHT

What would it be like?

THE FIRST THREE ROUNDS: Expect an intense give and take scenario in the first three rounds. Given the superb conditioning of the two heroes, nobody would budge in these cantos. Pride will be too high a stake. No oozing blood yet, but we will see reddening and swelling of the both faces. These rounds will be hard to score. Let’s just say, a little unbalance to both sides. Score: Pacquaio: 29; Marquez: 28.

THE FOURTH ROUND: In the fourth round, Marquez’ cracks will slowly show. He would recognize by then that his power would not be enough to flatten Pacquaio. Cautious, he will toe the line until the bell rings. Score: Pacquaio: 39; Marquez: 37.

THE FIFTH ROUND: The fifth canto saw Marquez realizing that if the grain of the fight will continue, there’s no way for him to win. So, he would do something different. This time he would force the issue to knock-out Pacquaio. That’s what he is there for. Then, Marquez would go blazing at the sound of the bell. Pacquaio unsuspecting of his foe’s bad intentions would go defensive – backpedalling & absorbing power shots. Pacquaio would be hurt and wobbling on the ropes.

Then, “BUUG’! Marquez down the canvas. “What happened? Ah… a slip in time of a Pacquaio’s awkward but lucky shot. No damage, physically, Shattered Pride? Yes. But No, I’ll get even”. Marquez renewed his onslaught once again – more fiercely this time. The bell rang. But with the knock down, Marquez failed in his 5th round bid. Score: Pacquaio: 49; Marquez: 45.

THE SIXTH ROUND: Ego wounded, Marquez would be constrained to do a “no matter what”. With same intensity he clobbered Pacquaio fearlessly. Manny tagged hard several times in those hail mary’s. Sensing success, Marquez’ onslaughts intensified. Then he saw Manny’s patented left straight – “this is it! This is what I’m rehearsing for!” Then he heaved high, and with all his strength & power, unleashed a right straight to Manny’s face.

What happened? Marquez this time could not even have the luxury of pondering on it. He can do it later.

While his right straight in full thrust was still flying on the air, Marquez was hit by a murderous Manila Ice, the Filipino’s vaunted right hook following a faked left straight. He fell to the canvas – the sixth flooring, in other words.

Then for two minutes, lights went out. Just as Ricky Hatton, he can have his askings later….

Thank Heavens, game over in six rounds!

THE AMBIGUITY

THE KNOCK-OUT THAT NEVER WAS

The drama lasted for 12 full rounds. But the anemic ending left the 16,500 sea of people in attendance at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas and the millions of humanity around the world unfulfilled.

Suspenseful of a knock-out to unfold.., but the knock-out never came.

THE SUSPENSE OF AMBIGUITY

True to its form and substance, the tension of ambiguity was not there as it was certain that Manny Pacquiao would win.

As to ‘when the knock-out should take place’ was the thing of suspense in the figments of imagination. That’s what the full pack attendance and the expected large PPV numbers are all about.

Enthralling the much ballyhooed fable of the so-called “African-American Street Fighting Style” can supposedly bring on the table; the boxing world projected a fierce, live and interactive fight amidst a compelling exchange of powerful punches that both protagonists are known for. For a future Hall of Famer who has made a profession by zapping the wits out of his aggressive oppositions, Mosley promised to “shock the world”.

Lopsided, as it all was.., a relatively boring fight. But then among many other recent fights, Manny Pacquiao has just concluded a ‘finishing school’ on Mosley. No doubt it was another great performance; in fact it was a vivid 'exit interview' for one (Mosley) in his path to retirement. But an uncooperative salsa partner kept the Filipino hard-hitting boxing icon from showcasing fully his brilliancy. For not biting the bullet, Mosley was booed repeatedly while Pacquaio’s beat drums went wild to peak proportions. The disparity between the two gladiators was obvious from the opening round, with Mosley’s tentativeness promptly besieged to deal with the puzzle of Pacquiao's speed and fluidity. Of course, it was so expected but Mosley himself was strong, fast and shifty. When everyone thought of him as washed out, he twisted history by knocking out the bullstrong Antonio Margarito in a manner beyond expectations.

Yet, it was not even close. Pacquiao widely outgunned Mosley in almost all departments, landing 182 punches out of 552 shots as against Mosley’s 82 of 260 or a disparity of some 100 blows that reached its mark. But, that was far from the Pacman’s normal stats.

COMPARING MOSLEY WITH CLOTTEY

Mosley and Clottey had something in common. Both refused to dance the tango with the pound-for-pound kingpin. In Pacman’s fight against Clottey, Pacman threw 1,231 shots and connected on 246. On the other hand, the Ghanaian Hitter threw a total of 399 shots connecting 108. Compare that to Mosley’s measly 82 of 260 - it shows that the stationary Clottey even in his all-night-long turtle shell defense was more active than Mosley.

But knowing that Mosley is quicker, more agile and more of a volume-puncher than Clottey - it could only mean that Mosley was more scared and frozen to lock horns with the Filipino than Clottey. Same as Clottey, Shane Mosley never had the confidence to engage Pacquiao in a brawl despite Pacquiao giving Mosley repeated lures, if not, opportunities to rumble. Over the hill, although this was Mosley’s 21st title fight, the wear and tear from his 54 fights had been exposed especially after the third round knock down.

THE THIRD ROUND KNOCK DOWN

Within the closing minute in the third round, a thunderous left straight knocked down Mosley kissing the canvas. It was the third case in his entire career. Vernon Forrest did it twice and Pacquaio this time. Mosley must have tasted the acidic venom of the piercing blow of the man known to be a 'small guy' but a 'giant killer'.

‘This could be it!’ Shane must have thought of that, because after the third round, Mosley became a mere shadow of his old self. “Shocking the World” was not after all meant to be a war but to have preserved himself from a sure knock –out.

Then Mosley ran adeptly all night. And as Mosley continued evading himself in a mix; Pacquaio although in less frequency, consistently landed big punches. It then appears that the African-American was killing the clock, no matter if Pacquaio continuously heaped up points. He knew he cannot win, anyway.

Pacquaio on the other hand was visibly disappointed because he found himself in an unsatisfactory lesser output. At 552 punches in 12 rounds, or a 46 punches-per-round average is ‘underwhelmingly’ uncharacteristic of him.

Mosley’s trickery thus voided Pacquiao of the opportunity to become the first to stop him and spirited away the precious knock-out frenzy awaited by the boxing world. It also deprived Manny and Coach Freddie Roach of the opportunity to execute the “Bruce Lee Trap” that he and Pacquiao prepared and mastered in the gym. Mosley hardly threw his signature overhand right - cautious to get hit by a perfect counter left. That’s the specific Jeet Kune Do strike he must have been afraid of.

THE TENTH ROUND “KNOCK-DOWN”

The 10th Round saw a shocking string of the fight when Mosley stepped on Manny’s lead foot and pushed Pacquiao to the canvas. Referee Kenny Bayless ruled it a knockdown, though replays revealed it to be something else. Pacquiao appeared to be in temporary disbelief but the inequality of the ersatz knockdown, ignited a furious attack bulldozing Mosley for the knockout as the crowd erupted. Mosley backpedaled feverishly, absorbing ‘bad intention' cluster bombs along the way. It was the first time an angry Pacquaio seen fighting with fists of fury.

But Pacquiao’s surges lasting for 2-1/2 rounds in the pursuit of the knockout couldn't terminate an elusive challenger who was in full retreat throttle as the crowd unleashed a wave of boos, clearly crazy over Mosley's unwillingness to come and face the battle.

As the final bell rang, Judges Dave Moretti and Duane Ford scored it 120-108 and 120-107, respectively. It means a full shut-out to them – meaning further that Mosley did not win any round. But Judge Glenn Trowbridge had it at 119-108 after giving Mosley the 10th round when Kenny Bayless ruled Mosley’s push and foot stepping as a knockdown.

My own score card showed 118 – 108 giving the first round even while just for the sake of the sport, heeding Referee Kenny Bayless’ erroneous call of a Pacquaio knock down.

Understandably, Judges Moretti and Ford must have disregarded the erroneous call. Referee Bayless himself acknowledged the error and apologized to Roach.

THE AFTERMATH

Now richer by $ 20 to $ 30 million, Pacquiao was seen visibly unscathed when he appeared in coat-and-tie in the post-fight press conference, raised his win-loss-draw record to 54-3-2 with 38 knockouts. Mosley on the other hand, now entitled to $ 5 to $ 6 million paycheck, wore dark shades to hide his reddened eyes but not his swollen face, fell to 46-7-1, with 39 knockouts.

“I don’t think he tried to win the fight. And when you get to that point in boxing, it’s time to call it a day.” Coach Freddie Roach said of Mosley.

Pacquiao – Mosley?

My immediate reaction was, “it would only last two rounds”…

Forgive me for this uncharacteristic mood but this time I’m conceiving of a Mosley episode akin to a ‘Hatton Syndrome’ - demolished & crushed by Pacquaio in two rounds. That’s honestly speaking.

On the other hand, I’d also like to think that in elite boxing, anything can happen. Boxing on a square ring is a long process. Every fight is a new fight. And training and re-training for a new battle have to be worked out over and all over again. There are no short-cuts. Preparation for a fight speaks of 90% of what it is supposed to be happening in the ring.

Speaking of Mosley and Hatton, both had displayed their wares with a common opponent in Floyd Mayweather Jr. Hatton’s performance against the Pretty Floyd although stopped in Round 10, to me, was much better.

In the case of Mosley, he had some great moments with Floyd in the first two rounds. But after Round 2, Sugarless Shane became a dribble bubble as if a confused gladiator. Lackluster, in short, many were unimpressed. Probably, it was not his day. But with a forgettable Sergio Mora, the draw was not even imagined because who is supposedly Sergio compared to Sugar Shane Mosley? Most probably, age did have taken over.

That’s it my friends, this time the tension of ambiguity as an element prior to a mega-fight is not permeating my senses. From the Barrera, Morales, Marquez, Diaz, Dela Hoya, Cotto, Clottey and Margarito episodes, amongst others - there's always that element of uncertainty. Then the ambiguity motivates suspense which in turn fires up the imagination.

Pacman’s camp is said to be the best this time – the training regimen & physical conditioning flawless and no reports of distraction, political, showbiz, whatsoever. The Filipino great is in his best shape. He is reportedly packed with power, speed, stamina and agility. In fact, Pacquiao is 110% ready as of the time of this writing. This, of course, is bad news for Mosley.

Over his 18-year professional career, 39-year-old Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KOs) had fought the best of high-quality opponents. World Champions in big names like Oscar de la Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Vernon Forrest, Ricardo Mayorga, Winky Wright, Fernando Vargas, Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, among many others. He had been towering over the lightweight, welterweight, and junior middleweight divisions. But at 39, Sugar Shane Mosley must now be over the hill and given his recent performances, few are giving Shane Mosley much of a chance against Manny Pacquiao. The odds shows it; 8-1, Pacquaio the overwhelming favorite.

Mosley, with a guaranteed purse of $ 5 million, had never been knocked out in his carreer. The talk on the air therefore is “in what round will the reigning world pound-for-pound Pacquaio do it”. And Pacquaio will be paid $ 20 million for it.

But then, this is the year of shocking upsets. Juan Manuel Lopez, Andre Berto, to mention just a few of big name losses beyond expectations - and these upsets seem to be shaping as the trend. Would it be Mosley’s riding chance? Who knows? Bigger, heavier and taller than Pacquaio, Shane is expected to deliver a good, crafty, intelligent if not, a wily dirty fight. Mosley, an 8-1 underdog by the odd makers, said the underdog position only motivates him even more "to shock the world" and beat Pacquiao decisively. A future Hall of Famer, the old dog must have hidden new tricks in his sleeves.

Showing respect for his African-American foe, Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs), does not expect an easy night. "We’re not focused for the knockout. All we do is work hard and if the knockout comes, it comes. We’ve prepared ourselves fighting for 12 rounds," said Pacquiao.

Let us see what happens!

Knock-Out of the Year? For the second time to his credit – Yes!

THE LEFT HOOK

It’s the perfect left hook once again. And the Mexican warrior Fernando Montiel sank flat deep onto the canvas. The motors in his nerves jerked some assymmetrical sub-transients and the ensuing voltage dip triggered spasmodic convulsions on Montiel’s legs. Then the senses estranged from the soul whilst the world suddenly shut-out from Montiel’s wits.

It was brief! Game over in 5 minutes & 25 seconds - so to speak. I had seen it before when Ricky Hatton once journeyed to the wonderland – also in the second round.

Then, the Mexican warrior’s heart took over the brains but only to do a copy-cat Chicken Dance… I had also seen it before with the cocky Vic Darchinyan in his infamous boogie - courtesy of the same devastating razor-sharp left hook from the same origin. To recall, it was the first ‘Knock-Out of the Year’ in Nonito’s name.

Both Darchinyan and Montiel didn’t see it. All that happened was just a flash-over. Brutal but swift, both did not comprehend how it was done. Of course in Nonito, the Sidorenko fight looked deceptively easy. The Darchinyan episode likewise seemed chicken feed - in fact many called it a fluke. And the highly touted Montiel war was after all, the simplest.

Boxing Made Easy, so to speak – that’s Nonito’s trademark. That must be the reason why boxers with big names are avoiding Nonito like a plague.

THE RISE OF A SUPERSTAR

Then, a Superstar is born. That’s NONITO DONAIRE, JR., the Filipino.

The usual 'pakilala' & ‘pagkilala’ in Round 1 saw Nonito dominating the canto. Focused and with the effective long shots as expected, he finished the round unscathed, but successfully delivered samples of power left hooks and right straights which found its mark to the face and to the body of the Mexican. Five or six times, I thought. The Mexican must have tasted the crispy bites.

The second Round was supposed to be Montiel’s. He had to recover the first round loss. He already discerned the fabric of the fight and if the fight conditions continued, he would surely lose. He had to deliver his own punctuation marks as the best bantamweight of the world. Then Nonito dropped his left arm seemingly allowing Montiel to hit him. With a series of successful hits, this boosted the Mexican’s confidence. This was then his opportunity - the very Nonito's mistake he'd been waiting for.

As I was about to comment that Donaire’s strategy in Round 2 was wrong; Montiel unleashed a big right cross. And while Montiel's killer right cross still in mid-air, a flash of lightning occurred. Then at the corner of my eye I saw Montiel on the canvas - his legs in involuntary spasm, pupils of his eyes immobile leering out to nowhere. I can’t believe it! How did it happen?

Of course the Mexican warrior got to his feet after a second attempt. I shouted to the TV; “Ref no! Don’t stop the fight!” Let the two best bantamweights of the world show what they can offer. I had watched several of Montiel's fights including that with Z. Gorres. Like a diesel engine, Montiel becomes more efficient when heated up and his durability outstanding. The knock down could have only been a lapse and tide might equalize in a little while. The Referee did let the fight continue even as Montiel did not respond properly. It was a double-world championship bout - it could not just be terminated in the ordinary way… The rest is history… There’s no way that Montiel can redeem his acumen at the moment.

I now understand why the Filipino is called “THE FLASH”. It was only after the replays and the slo-mos that made me recognize the flashy but masterful explosion of that perfectly timed counter left hook that caused the short circuits in both Darchinyan’s and Montiel’s systems. It was after all, ninjaic magic. But it was real – again, another perfect execution of a sweet science. In Engr. Tony Gicum Jr.’s words, “the piercing left hook in full-torque hitting the temple – bulls-eye.”

SPEED, POWER & INTELLIGENCE

Sporting a record of 44W-2L with 34 KO’s before the eventual clash with Nonito, no one had ever knocked down Montiel in his 15 year professional career. Montiel had always been feared as an adept ring scientist, but he had no cure for Donaire’s speed, reach, quickness, intelligence and power. He had no option except to mix it up and enforce his own devastating knock-out power but only to dwell on Donaire’s Black Hole trap. Yes, the Black Hole trap left a hairline fracture on Montiel's cheekbone.

Now 26W–1L with 18 KO’s; no doubt that the “Filipino Flash” displayed flashing speed, athletic prowess and wicked power that are all amazing. “I don’t think any bantamweight stands a chance with him,” Arum said. “Maybe we go up to 122. But I think the big, big fights are at 126.”

It meant that to Bob Arum, the names Abner Mares, Joseph Agbeko, Yonnhy Perez, and Vic Darchinyan are all passé. A clash with Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico must have been salivatingly palatable.

To NONITO DONAIRE, the new WBC and WBO Bantamweight Champion of the World; we are proud of you as a fellow Bol-anon and Filipino! You always have all our prayers and support.

THE TRIUMPH OF BOXING

What a fight!

It was a classic dismantling of the last Mexican warrior standing - the Great Antonio Margarito…!

And total annihilation without doubt; in a surgical demolition from the very first round to the end…!

The fight was a confirmation of the PACMAN as the gladiator on top of them all. At an official weight of 144.6 lbs, Pacquaio winning the 154 pound - Super Welterweight Championship Belt (Junior Middleweight in other boxing bodies) is an overwhelming achievement, probably the first of its kind. Remember, Pacquaio was not even supposed to be qualified to the division's minimum weight requirements!

That made the conquest even sweeter in what history’s unparalleled eighth crowns in eight weight divisions. Oscar Dela Hoya made it as a distant second at six; Sugar Ray Leonard, five; Floyd Mayweather Jr. at three … and the other big names, I can’t recall anymore.

The aftermath of the fight saw Margarito suffering a broken bone on the face. Other reports are saying something about a broken eye socket. Whatever it is, Antonio would have to stay longer at the hospital for surgery and more thorough check up. From the looks of it, he may have ended his career this early - and sadly, Margarito will never be the same again.

But then to me, the beatings he got in this lopsided fight may transcend beyond the present obviousness of a broken facial bone, I mean - I’m afraid Antonio may now be treading the path to Parkinson in the near or distant future – himself ending up in what he mimicked on Coach Roach days before the fight.

PACMAN QUITS!

As promised, Antonio Margarito didn’t quit. Robert Garcia, his Trainer, didn’t quit either. Referee Laurence Cole didn’t signal to a quit.

It was the Filipino Destroyer who quit!

In Rounds 11 & 12, Pacquiao took it easy and ceased throwing big bombs at the already devastated foe – but instead toying along to win the rounds and finish the job.

It was a shut-out conquest for one official judge from Germany, 120-108. This fight saw Pacquaio displaying much better in footwork, pin-point accuracy and timing that his left leads constantly knifed into the right side of the face and his right hooks into the left cheek bone of Margarito. The 11th Round made Margarito’s left eye shut closed and his right eye reduced to a peeping slit.

My personal score card showed 119-109. Having been generous to whoever the Pacman fights, I gave the benefit of an even Round 6 and a 10-9 for Margarito in Round 8. In Round 6, Margarito caught Paquaio a good body-punch but Pacquaio in his own words, “survived the round” and came back blazing strong with shots of his own.

As predicted by Freddie Roach, the fight may end up in a knock-out in the early rounds. Round 4 could be it! But Margarito refused to go down. Margarito was real big and tougher than Team Pacquaio thought. I scored it 10-8 for Pacquaio for a very lopsided canto.

THE MISMATCH

The schooling by Pacquaio on Margarito was not without worries. Reporting for duty on fight night at 165 lbs against Pacquaio’s 148, the 17 pound difference in weight was too much of a mismatch.

‘Mismatch’… again?
Yes, the word reminded me of the first ‘mismatch’ with Oscar Dela Hoya. Of course, history tells us that mismatch may be nothing to Pacquaio as it turned out the other way around. But then, Margarito is taller, bigger and heavier than Dela Hoya. Granting that Oscar was already washed up at the time, Antonio Margarito is arguably still in his prime and he trained hard methodically & traditionally. Unlike Oscar's hi-tech weight regimen, Antonio rehydrated well to 165 on fight night. At 144.6 lbs on weigh-in Pacquiao had not even reached the maximum of the welterweight category. At 17 pounds difference in a super welterweight fight; no boxing pundit could not ever panic.

But then the fight was easy…

Three weeks before the fight date I wrote, “… a lot of set maneuvers in sequenced drills have yet to be made perfect”. That’s the concern of Coach Freddie Roach. As a coach and master strategist, it is his job to study the opponent – the strengths to be avoided, along with the weaknesses to be exploited upon. To top them all are the opponent’s bad habits – because it is in these bad habits that counters can be exploited to the fullest.

In short, it’s the power of anticipation – in Bruce Lee’s lingo, ‘Jeet Kune Do’. In Domeniko du Surigao’s language, ‘Nimo Naranai Do’.

Whatever it is, Coach Freddie has to anticipate. He has to develop antidotes to the opponent’s strengths. He has to re-enforce Pacman’s best moves, while diminishing Manny’s weaknesses. He needs to develop counter-measures to dominate the weaknesses and bad habits of the opponent.

An old dog maybe a willful recipient of new tricks, but the same dog goes back to its old form after learning painful terror lessons in the early rounds. And these same old mistakes resurface again and again. When this happens, the pre-determined, drill-perfected ambuscades become ripe for the kill.

That’s the forms with the mechanical mitts simulations are all about. Although in different forms of execution, it always happened all the time in Pacman’s recent fights. Remember Dela Hoya, Hatton & Cotto…?

If Pacquaio’s best defense is his offense, so be it. The Coaches' concerns to have Manny execute all-night offense – relentlessly giving Margarito no chance to launch his own offense. That meant stamina and speed. Again, it happened to all of the Pacman’s recent fights.

Now, the output of anticipation is the Game Plan.

“It’s an easy fight for us if we stick to the game plan. Manny knows what to do in every situation and we won’t lose (even) one second of the fight,” the Chief Trainer Freddie Roach said two days before the fight.

In the actual fight, Pacquiao was seen sticking to the game plan and the game indeed became methodical. But the easy fight became the physically hardest fight for the Filipino phenom. Pacman in a post-fight interview said, that he is still feeling aches and pain inflicted by brave Mexican whom he was not able to knock out or knock down in their 12-round match.

THE TRIUMPH OF BOXING

So then, the victory over Margarito was Manny’s added glory. It is his - and nobody can take it away from the man.

But then it’s Coach FREDDIE ROACH’s success and PHILIPPINE BOXING’s triumph too, at least for now.

In a team game like Boxing, we need good coaches and good pupils too. Something like ‘brains & brawns’ stuff. The Coach must be a figure to be trusted, respected and be looked up – that’s why he is the ‘coach’. If the pupil (who incidentally is the Boss) starts ‘not to believe’ in the coach anymore, it’s useless then to prolong the marriage. After all, in the boxing world; the coaches are just part of the pupil’s payroll.

The Baguio camp turned out not as good as expected. As Freddie quipped, “I think Congress is a little too close to Baguio and he’s missing the roll call and so forth. He wants a perfect attendance and all that. Then the President wants to talk to him.”

As Boxing doesn’t mix well with Politics, the first week in LA’s Wild Card gym was also marred by unexpected political side-trips. Damage control had to be done. At Wild Card, it was Roach’s call to close the doors. The crucial remaining days were kept secret. And that’s it that matters!

“From Baguio until now was a huge difference. The three weeks in America was great for him, his concentration level, his focus is a hundred percent better. His boxing was better. Everything is better”, Roach as quoted a few days before the fight.

When asked in a post-fight interview, Pacman said, “I’m a fighter and I have to do my job. My concern is not just for myself but for the people, how I can give them excitement, that’s all.” Of course, that’s Planet PACMAN is all about. The Sambayanang Filipino still wants to see their Hero there on top of the Boxing World – that’s my own opinion, by the way.

As the Boxing World beckons, Juan Manuel Marquez is the only fighter close to Pacman’s class. He however was once destroyed by an over-the contracted weight Floyd Mayweather Jr. To make things palatable, Juan Manuel Marquez must first crush Michael Katsidis convincingly by a knock-out, and then fights fellow Mexican Antonio Margarito. After the winnings, it will be good for Boxing to see him with Pacquiao in the Ring at 147 lbs.

The world fantasizes one more fight in either Marquez or Pretty Boy Floyd and the Filipino Nation (again, in my own opinion) will then free the Congressman to all the politics he wants.

After all, the Hero would have retired from Boxing a Hero – if that’s the case. Who knows, he may be a better performer in the other world of Politics.

THE VENOM OF SUCCESS

The fight with Antonio Margarito is inching closer - two more weeks of heavy training… the remaining days are for tapering down.

So then, Pacman has only two weeks of last hour cramming. Mentally and physically, it’s not enough. Coach Roach is concerned. To his mind, a lot of set maneuvers in sequenced drills have yet to be perfected.

The fans are worried. I too, am anxious.

Again, too many distractions… too many sidetrips.

This time, I’m not sure if the Filipino people can accept defeat. That of course includes those so-called ‘constituents’ of the Politician - the very ‘constituents’ who love him because he is the Congressman.

Yet I doubt that the Filipino nation (me, included), the so-called “Sambayanang Filipino” (in traditional politicians’ over-used flatter) prefers to see their idol in coat & tie, dining & mingling with the elite.

I still would like to believe the “Sambayanang Filipino” wants to see their idol’s hands raised in a stunning knock-out victory! That’s Planet Pacman is all about – nothing else.

Sidetrips...? Being a Congressman in Planet Pacman, is icing of the cake. In the highest degree, it is the self-actualization of the man’s long-time hierarchy of dreams. Hence, the congressman in Manny is bonus, at least, in the thoughts of many.

No question about it. That is his…

But then, the pressure and responsibility of being the man known as the singer, movie actor, basketball player, father, husband, lover, leader, writer, politician and world champion boxer rolled into one is not easy. It takes a lot of brain, blood, heart and attitude towards dealing with success itself.

Yet, all these successes from once a lowly life had its road through boxing. From his humble beginnings, he had attained the unthinkable. He had in his resume a record of seven crowns in seven weight divisions – an elite feat exclusive only to him. He has reached the summit amongst the Pound-for-Pound Kings subject to the ire and envy of other boxing greats. He had conquered the big names in the boxing world where nobody in the past could have ever imagined even in the wildest dreams. Barrera, Marquez, Morales, Diaz, Dela Hoya, Hatton, Cotto, Clottey. Who else?

Whatever fame, fortune and everything Pacquaio has today, he owes it to Boxing. Eclipsing the then phenomenal Muhammad Ali’s earnings, Pacquaio now is a billionaire by Philippine standards. Nobody can’t take it away from him… again, it’s his - and it’s through this boxing prominence and resources that he became a Congressman.

An eighth title? I doubt if it’s enough fire & motivation for the man at the apex.

Kayang kaya? I hope it is. Over-confidence? I hope not.

Now, comes Margarito… Can the Pacman do it again? Of course yes, but maybe not!

Margarito is one of the greatest in the trade. To his credit, he had likewise conquered the biggest & best names in his weight range. He is heavier, bigger, pressure-packed and significantly taller than Pacquaio. On top of this, Margarito is known for his granite chin, enduring stamina, timing, bravery, physical strength, using reach advantage to the fullest, dirty tactics and most importantly, focus.

When Pacquaio fought the 5’9” Clottey, he looked like a 12-year old boy fighting a full-grown adult. Pacman dominated the fight though, while Clottey only managed to land a few power shots. At the end of the day, Pacquaio was the runaway winner but his bulging face looked like he was the vanquished. As I said in my previous blog, had Clottey elected to fight, the result could have been the reverse.

But Antonio Margarito is stronger, taller and craftier than Clottey. Now with the 5’11” Margarito, Pacquaio will look like a kid fighting a giant. Unlike Clottey’s defensive shell, the hard-working offensive minded Margarito is an unrelenting piston in his two fists.

As of today, it seems that Antonio Margarito, the Mexican Tornado, is more prepared mentally & physically than our hero. After a year of suspension, Margarito is hungrier than a tiger – and he wants a delicious big prey in Pacquaio no matter if its life or death. After Pacman, in Arum's words, "sky is the limit for Antonio"!

Motivation? Yes, Margarito has a big one! Bob Arum himself is convinced in Margarito’s resolve. He has trained like a mad man possesed. From the looks of it, he is well-conditioned and ready for war. On the other hand, Arum didn’t see the real Pacman and chided a rematch this early. By all indications, the war will be interestingly exciting for sure, but the shadow of frustration looms to the “Sambayanang Filipino”.

News items as of this moment are already full of “what ifs” and “upsets”. Rematch as an aftermath is now being talked about as the certainty of Pacquaio’s victory now clouded in doubt.

A recent news clip quoted Coach Freddie Roach saying, “It’s the worst training camp we ever had. Manny loves his job and misses his job as a congressman. His mind was on Congress for the first few weeks of training and you could tell. It wasn’t on being in the gym. He’s so proud to be a politician, and he walks the walk. He loves being a congressman and I feel that eventually, yes, we will lose him to politics.” Not now. Not on November 13. The people still hope that the venom of success has not yet eaten the inner veins of Pacman's spirit. We still can win.

Pacquaio won by a wide margin!

Every one of the 51,000 in attendance at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium and the millions in the boxing world knew it.

Judge Duane Ford scored it at 120-108, a shutout for Pacquiao – meaning, not a single round won by Clottey. Judges Levi Martinez and Nelson Vasquez each scored it at 119-109, giving Clottey one round. My own score card shows a 119–109. I gave Clottey Round 3.

INTENSITY Vs. TEPIDITY

But Pacquiao’s victory was perceived by many as an anemic drama sans the customary excitement. It was not even close. Sad to say, the fight became a target work-out for Pacquaio. That’s why the boxing world was unanimous in its verdict. No argument about it. Lopsided indeed as it was.

Pacquiao widely outgunned Clottey in almost all departments, throwing more than a hundred punches per round against Clottey’s average of thirty three; in the process, pressing Clottey to crouch into his defensive shell almost all night. The fight had just a very few exciting moments despite Pacquiao giving Clottey repeated lures, if not, opportunities to rumble.

Clottey's Lack of Aggression: The Pacman, while skirmishing with a virtual punching bag, his opponent Joshua Clottey ironically was not there to tango any serious risks, much more to stake for a stunning win even if he has the capability to do so. What seemed to steal the limelight of the fight may have been the "piyang-piyang" punch (double-roundhouse punch) Pacquiao landed simultaneously in the 4th round around Clottey's ears. Now, with the ‘mythical double punch’ in boxing (as respected sports analyst & columnist Quinito Henson puts it), it brought down shades of memory lane musing the circa Fernando Poe or Jun Aristorenas of the old Philippine movies.

There were no knockdowns in the fight despite its lopsidedness. Clottey’s turtle shell defense was excellent but his offense pathetically sporadic and was not enough to give colour to The Event. But then the aftermath showed a huge mouse swelling under Pacquiao’s right eye and his face reddened. In contrast, Clottey’s facade was hardly bruised (except for a slight swelling) although blood trickled from his nose. In short, Pacman seemed to appear as the vanquished while Clottey, the winner.

Tough Fight: Yet, the fight gives something to contemplate. Promoter Bob Arum was right in saying that “Clottey would be the toughest Pacman opponent ever”. Indeed he was, as Pacquiao himself conceded: “It was not an easy fight. It was hard. I felt his power. He is incredibly tough”.

In my previous article I mentioned that Joshua Clottey, the hard rock from Ghana, Africa would give Pacman a hard time. In the actual battle yesterday, not only that Joshua Clottey was in fact visibly much bigger, much taller and stronger but also was indeed a German Tiger Tank with crocodile armour. The audible loud thuds of the shots by Pacman on Clottey’s body speak for themselves as they seemed only to bounce back like hitting a heavy rubber bag.

Contrasting Agenda: Noticeably smaller on the ring, the Pacman looked as if a 12-year old kid fighting a full grown adult. The machinegun onslaught by the Filipino Destroyer couldn’t even dodge the Grandmaster. Although Clottey appeared wobbled in the second round, it was just a stroke of fluke as the Ghanaian reappeared unhurt. And the durable Grandmaster in the ensuing rounds took everything that Pacquiao had to offer.

But then Clottey had to lose. Pacman came to fight. Joshua submitted himself to preserve his own agenda. Pacman’s Brilliancy against Clottey’s Passiveness - so to speak!

“Pacquiao is very fast. This is the first time I’ve lost a fight”, a befuddled Clottey said, dismissing of course his previous three arguable losses. The former welterweight champion Clottey lost while maintaining his claim of never having been knocked out as a pro. Was this his motivation?

STATISTICS SPEAK

Compubox numbers show Pacman threw 1,231 total shots and connected on 246. Out of 1,231 that Pacman unleashed, 632 were power punches and 549 lead right hand jabs. Out of 632 power punches, 232 of them connected while out of 549 jabs, only 12 landed cleanly.

On the other hand, the Ghanaian Hitter threw a total of 399 shots connecting 108. Of his 399 punches, 237 were power punches where 82 connected. Out of 399 Clottey thrown, 162 of them were jabs landing 26.

To recap:

1) Total Punches Thrown: Pacman = 1,231 (246 landed);

Clottey = 399 (108 landed)
2) Power Punches Thrown: Pacman = 632 (232 landed); Clottey = 339 (82 landed)
3) Jabs Thrown: Pacman = 549 (only 12 landed); Clottey = 162 (26 landed)

THE BOTTOM LINE

It is clear then that the prolific Pacman outworked the economical Hitter from Ghana in a ratio of 3:1. No doubt about it, and it was these sheer numbers that made him victorious. But note that Pacman wasted 400 power punches (63.3%) to the Grandmaster’s gloves, arms and elbows. On top of this, Pacman’s measly twelve connecting jab outputs are only 2.2% of his inputs. It meant further that 537 of these jabs did not reach its destination. All taken together, about 985 Pacman blows were blocked by the Grandmaster. Whew!

Of the total punches Pacman unleashed, only 246 landed or a measly 19.98% - what a very low efficiency so to speak. And to emphasize, Manny Pacquiao was unable to land (except for a few streaks) his signature darting straight lefts that everyone was waiting for. Somehow it went to show the effectiveness of Clottey's defense. Had it not been for the Pacman’s stamina in the same work rate, Manny would not have reached the end of the 12-round tunnel.

On the other hand, 31.86% of Clottey’s total blows connected, while 24.19% of his power punches found its mark. Clottey’s jabs was 387 less than Pacman’s, but it connected 26, that is more than double of Pacman’s output of 12. Economical but accurate? If that's what we call efficiency, let it be.

What does this mean? If Pacman was lethargic, and Clottey a little bit industrious, the outcome might have ended up in reverse.

MATTER OF POWER

What if The Hitter opted not to be ‘economical’? What would have happened should the Grandmaster double his inputs? By saying ‘double the workrate’; I mean, I wish to see only 798 blows from the Hitter. That's only 64.8% of Pacman’s unleashed punches.

Scary Thoughts: I fancy imagining this scenario because Clottey did manage with ease and uncanny timing to land crisp jabs, a number of counter right hands, body hooks and strong uppercuts that all the time snapped Pacquiao’s head up. These few moments of Clottey’s brilliance were the ones responsible for Pacman’s face swelling. And this is the reason why Lenny de Jesus, Clottey’s trainer pleaded him to throw more of his own attacks. He must have seen a very probable upset.

Clearly, there was terrifying power packed in those Hitter’s blows. And imagine if Pacquaio received double the amount, what could have been the damage? Clottey said, “I didn’t feel Pacman’s power”. Then, why didn’t he engage? After all, he is a warrior of hardened steel make-up clad in crocodile armour? He could have always bulldozed those Pacman’s flurries and find the marks of his own weapons? He could have done it, I believe. We saw how the Ghanaian ignored and brushed away Pacman’s attacks on the body. Or probably, he was afraid because he knew his chin is not as good as his granite body.

“I think he’s feeling Pacquiao’s power,” in contrast, Clottey’s trainer Lenny DeJesus said during a late-rounds interview with HBO. Clottey himself explained why his caution, “Pacquaio was waiting for me to open up so he could time and counter me.” Clearly Clottey must have felt that engaging with the Pacman for 12 rounds would only end up in frustration and futility.

SPEED & VOLUME DID IT

It can be recalled that there were scary instances that Manny stood in front of Clottey in the willingness to receive the Hitter’s thunderous body shots and uppercuts. I don’t really know if they were ploys to dupe Clottey to open up into a false sense of confidence. But if they were, just the same, Manny would launch series of fists of fury in massive counter-attacks that just overwhelmed Clottey’s impetus every time.

Even if the Grandmaster wanted to play toe to toe, Manny Pacquiao’s volume of punches thrown in crazy angles would have drowned Clottey of any chance of any counter-offense without opening himself up for a sure knock-out. Remember, Manny threw 832 more punches than the defense preoccupied Clottey and clearly didn’t give the Ghanaian much of an opportunity. In this fight, Manny’s defense is his offense. There was no way to escape, then. The same end-result was inevitable.

“Clottey was afraid to open up because he knew Manny would hit him,” said Roach. “That’s why he didn’t throw as many punches as he should have. If he did, Manny would’ve located the openings to land his hooks and straights.”

In the eyes of the legendary trainer Freddie Roach, “If there was something that I found lacking, it was probably Manny’s defense. I thought he got hit with Clottey’s right hand once too many. Other than that, it was a perfect fight.”

In this case gentlemen, Joshua Clottey, the Hitter, or the Grandmaster from Ghana achieved his objectives.

Firstly, even the Pacman, the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world could not stop him. Secondly, he achieved his millions a number of his countrymen are wanting.

With the guaranteed $ 1.2 million ++ (probably reaching $ 3.0 million), life in boxing must after all, not that bad.

March 14, 2010: THE EVENT: PACMAN Vs. THE HITTER

But, boxing pundits see THE EVENT uneventful...

The tremendously one-sided odds at minus 350 for Clottey against Pacquiao’s plus 500 show a reflection of how the boxing world looks at the fight. 'The Event' is perceived to be easy for Pacquiao - not the usual heart-throbbing excitement, not the usual high voltage level of competition. So then, it is not the event most people wanted to see.

Probably, the name ‘Joshua Clottey’ lacks the luster imprimatured in the subconscious. Following the fizzling-out of the much fancied Pacquiao-Mayweather bubble, the ‘Hitter from Ghana' has seemed relegated to second fiddle - probably an unworthy substitute.

I however disagree.

JOSHUA CLOTTEY

Underestimating the guy would be a big blunder. Joshua Clottey (35-3 with 20 KO’s), is first rate. To recall, he was also a welterweight world title holder after subduing the quick-fisted Jab Judah, a southpaw same as the Pacman. And Joshua is still in his prime. Although he had three losses in his resume - all of them were interestingly arguable.

Argentina’s Carlos Baldomir, Mexico’s Antonio Margarito and Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto, yes, all big world champions, inflicted the only blurs into the otherwise excellent career of the man.

On the other hand, Pacquaio (50-3-2, with 38 KO’s), had three losses too – from a fellow Pinoy, a Thai and of course from the Mexican Erik Morales in their first encounter. These losses too were regarded as flukes. Except for Erik Morales, the first two losses of Manny are no big names.

And here we go again, what makes the fight appealing is the fact that Clottey is taller, bigger and a very dangerous welterweight. The “Hitter from Ghana" is durable, highly physical, intense and hungrily motivated to win. Of course our Pacman had proven his mettle against other big challenges as Dela Hoya, Hatton and Cotto. But judging from Joshua’s fearsome physique, he is like the impenetrable Tiger Tank terrorizing the African deserts during the Hitler days. Comparing with the softer Dela Hoya, Hatton and Cotto whom Pacman conquered, Clottey appears to be stiffer, harder and more durable. He was downed by Miguel Cotto two times in their own battle but each time he rose upon the occasion to finish strong.

Clottey has a solid good defense and note that he has a big gun in his sleeves – the head butt!

History tells us that Clottey was winning in his IBF Championship fight with Carlos Baldomir when he was disqualified in the 11th round for repetitive head butts. Prior to the disqualification, he was penalized two points for head-butting in the previous rounds. He could have won the title handily had he played clean.

Against Cotto, Joshua Clottey failed in what could have been the biggest upset at the time, in a controversial split decision to the heavily favoured Puerto Rican icon. Many fans called it a robbery. But again, Clottey’s head-butting frenzy opened a cavernous wound around Cotto’s left eye in the third round. And Cotto bothered by blood oozing in the later rounds was never the same again. Cotto luckily escaped defeat though.

Watching youtube against Antonio Margarito, Clottey was on his way to deliver his best performance in a lifetime; in fact, he was ahead on points until the fourth round when he broke his hand. Despite the injury, Clottey refused to deteriorate and maintained his work rate until the end bell. He lost by a slim margin. Had it not been for the injury, Clottey said he could have won the fight.

So then, it showed that Clottey’s hard head (that not even a sledgehammer can crack) is more superior than his fists. His head, hardened as steel as in a Tiger Tank’s cannon is actually his open-secret weapon should the goings get rough. Pacquiao has to be prepared for it, otherwise the reminiscence of the bloody first Morales fight and the horror of the dirty Agapito Sanchez skirmish would flash back again.

Clottey, the street fighter and head-clashing monster has never been stopped. Of the fights I viewed on youtube, I never saw Clottey bleed, nor his facade deformed. He is fundamentally sound, ring smart and operates best in the inside. His arsenal includes left & right combinations, fearsome left & right uppercuts and counter left hooks, and of course the headbutt. His timing is impressive and accurate. His punches are all dedicated with bad intentions. Known for his toughness and durability, Clottey enjoying height & reach advantage will definitely be heavier than Pacman when they face off on March 14. And there is no catch weight here, they at full 147 lbs.

MANNY PACQUIAO

Also known as The Grandmaster, Joshua Clottey could be the toughest opponent the Pacman has ever had, as promoter Bob Arum puts it.

But Manny Pacquaio, the Tornado from the East, is a more complete and a much more versatile machine. But he has to work doubly hard to earn victory.

Mirroring from Coach Roach, Freddie knows the fight would be rough & tough. In the Hatton fight, Coach Roach predicted a three round game. In the Cotto episode, a first-round knock-out was foreseen (although it could have been a ploy). Now with Clottey, he is looking at a stoppage in the 9th round. It goes without saying that the Clottey fight is not a 'walk in the park'. And Freddie had to do more on his homework.

“We know his pluses and his mistakes,” said Roach. “He has a good defense but is very predictable. If his chin holds, we’ll destroy him downstairs and in nine rounds, the game is over.”

In most of the previous Pacman’s fights, the scary concerns were always the distractions during training. Now sombre as it appears to be, Pacman’s training camp is dead serious on Clottey. This time the boxing world never did hear of Freddie Roach or Alex Ariza sounding off an alarm. The trainers are all happy. Earlier than expected, Pacman as of last week seemed already in his peak form and ready to rumble. Conditioning Coach Alex Ariza vouched for it as “Pacman had never been in top shape than this fight”. This sounds good...

The magic in Pacman’s exciting performances will again showcase in this episode. But it certainly wouldn’t be easy. Clottey in his psyche has to win. Winning over the most popular and best pound-for-pound fighter in the world could not just be a challenge. It’s an obsession. He has to do all means within his will and power to win this fight. That makes Joshua Clottey more dangerous. He has nothing to lose.

However, there will be big body shots to the rib cage followed by right hooks to the chin by Manny. Flashes of them are seen in the drills with the punch mitts. Of course, the sight of the usual darting lead lefts are again figures of imagination this early, and don’t forget the venom in the Manila Ice that froze Hatton and Cotto.

The question probably is ‘how long can Clottey survive Manny’s onslaughts?’ On the other hand, ‘how can Manny deal with the sticky crimson fluid blinding his sight after a series of head butts?’ Surely, it would be a fight to remember.

In Pacman’s fight with Miguel Angel Cotto, I wrote that 'I loved to see the ending by a spectacular uppercut'. It didn’t happen, but then, most likely it will come next Sunday morning.

By then, The Hitter from Ghana, the so-called Grandmaster will join the frenzied party portrayed above.

ELECTRICAL COMPETENCY SEMINARS FOR 2010

CESEEPS INTERNATIONAL announces the offering of a wide-ranging competency-based Training Program for 2010. The Program is composed of two component seminars which had already been applied for accreditation with the IIEE & PRC CPE Councils.

In alignment with the IIEE/PRC CPE Councils' requirements in ensuring the quality of the program, the seminars are designed to feature more detailed approaches and innovations in terms of coverage, vivid presentations, ‘sought-for’ illustrative examples and eye-revealing applications in addressing myths & traditional folklores common in practice.

The seminars are supported with more comprehensive, newly updated & substantially expanded training notes & materials in book-bound forms. These Notes had been a product of decades of hard work, research studies and collection of fascinating information relevant to the field of electrical system designing. It is then CESEEPS’s intent to share these accumulated treasure to the upstart young engineers who look up the same dream of competency development through a series of training programs that CESEEPS has made available. Attending the training program will earn the participant at least 24 CPE credit units (as being applied for) per seminar.

Completing these two seminars will make the engineer confident in designing & building the electrical systems for industrial & commercial complexes from the viewpoint of sizing & dimensioning. This therefore is truly addressing a part of the gap between the academe and the industry.

THE 2010 & 2011 SEMINAR CONTENTS

There are two sets of seminars that CESEEPS will be carrying-out for the next two years starting 2010. These are the so-called Lessons 101 and 102 of the program entitled, “Electrical Systems Design for Industrial & Commercial Complexes”. As of the present, these two seminars are the ones applied for IIEE & PRC CPE Council accreditation good for 2010 & 2011.

SEMINAR 1 (Lesson 101):
‘ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS DESIGN FOR INDUSTRIAL & COMMERCIAL COMPLEXES’ (Part 1)

In a three-day seminar, Lesson 101 is just Part One of the basic module on ‘ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS DESIGN FOR INDUSTRIAL & COMMERCIAL COMPLEXES’. It deals with sizing and dimensioning of assorted circuits from the smallest loads up to the entire power demand of the electric system of a commercial building or complex. It discusses in fine details how low voltage electrical system components are sized from scratch i.e., from the remotest branch circuits, panelboards, distributors, feeders & sub-feeders, to LV/lv transformer circuits and up to the main power center.

Simplistically made understandable to the engineer-participant, Lesson 101 attempts to achieve part of the designing & dimensioning of a model medium size-industrial plant or commercial complex in the Philippine setting. It also discusses myths and folklores in designing that are common occurrences in practice.

With the Philippine Electrical Code, National Electrical Code and other International Standards such as ANSI and IEC as bases, the seminar will likewise demonstrate with detailed illustrative examples on the ‘Applications of Wires & Cables – Its Penalty Conditions’, ‘The Myths in THHN Application’, ‘The Art of Illumination’ as applied and interpreted into electric circuits, ‘Non-Motor Branch Circuit & Feeders’, ‘The Importance of Ballasted Lamps in Circuit Dimensioning’, ‘Circuit & Feeder Overcurrent Protection’, ‘Three-Phase Panelboard Dimensioning’, ‘Sizing Neutral & Equipment Ground Conductors’, ‘Powering Computers & I. T. Environments’, ‘Wire & Cable Withstands & Current-Limiting Strategies’, ‘Designing LV/lv Transformer Circuits’, and ‘Over-All Building Load Estimation’.

SEMINAR 2 (Lesson 102):
‘ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS DESIGN FOR INDUSTRIAL & COMMERCIAL COMPLEXES’ (Part 2)

As sequel to Lesson 101, Lesson 102 is Part Two of the module on ‘ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS DESIGN FOR INDUSTRIAL & COMMERCIAL COMPLEXES’.

Lesson 102 somehow completes the electrical dimensioning for the industrial plant or commercial complex in concept. It deals with the detailed designing of Motor Controllers for Specific Applications, Motors & Group Motor Circuits, Motor Control Centers & Associated Feeders & Distributors, Fire Pumps & Emergency Supplies, System & Equipment Grounding, Over-All System Dimensioning, and Power Centers & Distribution Systems commonly employed in industrial & commercial complexes.

The seminar likewise discusses ‘How to Develop Single Line Diagrams – the ANSI Vs. IEC Styles’, ‘NEMA Vs. IEC Style Components & MCC’s’, ‘Sizing Capacitors for MCC’s & Power Centers’, ‘Sizing Neutral & Protective Earth Conductors – The ANSI & The IEC Ways’, ‘Application of Different Earthing Systems’ employed all over the world, ‘Selection of Appropriate Voltages for the Industrial Plant or Commercial Complex’ and ‘The Right Equipment & Components for Industrial & Commercial Complexes’ in concept.

Made simplistically understandable to the engineer-participant; the three-day seminar on Lesson 102 attempts to achieve part of the design of a model medium size-industrial plant or commercial complex in the Philippine setting.

Information contained in this work has been obtained from sources believed to be reliable. Provisions of the Philippine Electrical Code, the National Electrical Code and other International Standards are cited as bases, - in an effort to make the young engineer grow in these particular fields.

THE TRAINING MATERIALS

In a series of ‘power notes’ called in its entirety as, “DESIGN PRACTICES IN ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS”, these Notes are written as materials for a training program intended for cadet engineers, electrical practitioners, plant engineers, maintenance engineers, electrical designers, construction engineers & project managers.

To the up-starting engineers, these materials open up real-life applications on the theories learned from college that make them conversant & confident on actual systems found in industrial environments.

To the practicing electrical engineers, these notes provide quick design practices that translates into shorter technical planning, prompt equipment procurement and shorter execution time; the results of which, are cost effective, safe and reliable electrical systems.

The concepts, procedures and pronouncements written in these notes are based on recognized engineering practices and publications in reference to the PEC of the Philippines; NEC, IEEE & ANSI of the USA; CENELEC of Europe; and IEC of the World. Experiences in best designing practices by others as well as the benchmarks gathered from several technical audits are interpreted herein, viz-a-viz the behavior of industrial electrical systems. Attempts to simplify and focus on specific applicable areas in the Philippine scenario but cognizant to international standards are typical in these Notes.

The Training Materials “DESIGN PRACTICES IN ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS” will form part of the “must know” competencies imperative to Filipino engineers. Focused on industrial plant and commercial building applications, these training notes are envisioned to become the greatest legacy that we can offer.

2) Effective Training Materials

Each participant shall be provided with a especially written book-bound ‘Power Notes’ as part of training materials for the specific scope of the program being applied for.

Two (2) Laptops with two (2) Projectors shall be used simultaneously in the program. One for the Power Point presentations and the other one for the pre-organized illustrative examples, tables, charts; while the white boards shall be used for detailed calculation tasks.

Each participant is to be provided with a kit containing bond paper, writing pads, pens, pencils, etc.

3) Relevant Topics

Topics and over-all seminar contents are carefully chosen as relevant, real-life, workable and more importantly, addressing the training needs of the engineers-participants.

MECHANISM FOR MEASURING QUALITY OF PROGRAM

Pre–Seminar Diagnostics: This is a multiple choice written exams aimed to determine the stock knowledge of engineers-participants on the subjects focused in the seminar.

Post-Seminar Diagnostics: This is a multiple choice written exams aimed to determine and establish the learnings acquired from the seminar and so with the effectiveness of the program.

Seminar Evaluation by Participants: This feedback mechanism is accomplished by each participant on his/her impression, comments and rating on the training program. It also indicates the strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvements. This evaluation will also determine the success or failure of the program.

OTHER SEMINARS: Seminars on other subjects are envisioned to be conducted in later years and will be applied for accreditation accordingly as the time comes.

Besting over seven other regions, IIEE Region 7’s 10th Regional Conference held in August of this year was adjudged & declared as the MOST OUTSTANDING IIEE REGIONAL CONFERENCE for 2009. Nostradamus’s horror of the unknown has now been revealed and the shockwaves of the aftermath engulfed victory to the Philippines as the tectonic plates continue to shake..!

Fifty-five seconds into Round 12, “Enough is enough!” - Referee Kenny Bayless ruled it. Four rounds ago, he had already seen the irreversible end. And it was in fact a one-sided massacre - a carnage akin to the Diaz, Dela Hoya and Hatton episodes.

WHAT A WAR! Two great fighters, both treasured icons in their own countries, turned the night into a masterpiece. Never to be forgotten beyond eons, COTTO Vs. PACQUIAO together in almost 12 rounds of boxing brought the magnum opus of a super-fight of the modern times. In a non-stop amazing violence, Manny Pacquiao, The Machine (50W-38 KO’s) stopped WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (34W-27 KO’s) in round twelve to win another world title on Sunday morning (Philippine Time) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

And the tough Puerto Rican, Miguel Angel Cotto, his face transformed into a grotesque mask in the end - humbled, owned..., totally vanquished. Now Miguel knows, Freddie Roach’s prediction of a first round knock-out was just a decoy – a ruse to bring him under the master’s skin, but at least he could have wished the prediction was right.

And HISTORY; yes, was finally made. Where nobody had ever treaded before, MANNY PACQUAIO, the TORNADO FROM THE EAST, the so-called PACIFIC STORM successfully affixed his seventh world crown, in seven weight divisions. An elite feat exclusive only to him, Pacquaio has morphed to quell traditional borders of the often insular bubble of boxing. Together with my allies Noel, Cesar, Ely, Loyde, Ernie, Agnes, Burds, Roland, Audrey, Buboy and Mimi; we were all there through PPV witnessing history in the making in real time.

PACMAN’S INCREDIBLE ARSENAL

But then clearly, the genuine welterweight Miguel Cotto was the toughest & strongest challenge the Pacman had ever faced. He lasted until the 12th round of brutal punishment that even the Diaz, Dela Hoys & Hatton episodes all combined, cannot approximate the intensity and the quality of this one epic war.

“Great guy, great performance” Roach said, referring to Miguel Cotto. “He gave it 100 percent, he came to fight. I told Manny that the only time he will hit you is when you are flat footed. When Manny went flat footed, Miguel started doing better with the jab and the straight punches. He fought a much better fight than I thought he would. We talked to him after the fight, and he's quite a gentleman.”

When Pacquiao knocked off to dislodge Roach’s mitt during a drill, people couldn’t help but mumble about how Miguel could handle such a power. The only guys not buying the signal were Cotto’s camp themselves, of course the great Oscar Dela Hoya, Felix Trinidad and other champions in their own rights who couldn’t believe the phenomenon of a diminutive once-upon-a-time 106 pounder. At the prime of his career, the Boricua champion is truly bigger & stronger, in top shape as a result of superb conditioning bringing along a devastating left hook and body banging abilities that are bests in the sport. How can Miguel Angel Cotto lose?

But then as it turned out, the world’s best the pound-for-pound boxer in a smaller Pacman showcased a flotilla of incredible firepower of speed, stock stamina and relentless ferocity delivered in weird angles. To generally describe the fight, Manny did not dismantle Cotto with one shot, but instead relentlessly tattered Cotto with artilleries in unimaginable speed and fluidity in one combination after another. Manny jampacked Cotto from every conceivable angle, heaving, swinging and connecting in blinding speed before Cotto could have the opportunity to set up his own bombs. And the now famous right hook, the Manila Ice, commissioned to keep Cotto at bay, was Pacman’s answer to Cotto’s lightning quick double jabs. Most of the time successful, the right hook did significant damage preparatory to the left straights.

Cotto, fearsome at times with his vaunted jab & right straight combinations, brought great brilliance into the fight. Frighteningly competitive in the first half of the fight, in several times, Cotto did tag Pacman with his left hooks and uppercuts but Pacman’s super-human form would burn out Cotto all night with fast flurries that sent him backwards. Cotto then would retreat only to find more assault coming once again. And round after round, the script did not change. Pacquiao landed almost twice as many punches as Cotto. Pacman’s 336 to Cotto’s 172 - an indication of Pacman’s dominance with accuracy that was increasing as the rounds went the distance.

ROUND BY ROUND ACCOUNT

I should have been biased. Cotto did not win any round in my scorecard. But he won two rounds on the scorecards of two ringside judges and just one round on the card of the third. The Associated Press gave Cotto just the first round. After a ten hour break, this time sober and more generous, I reviewed the fight and gave Cotto the benefit of Round 1.

Round 1 was fairly even. To our thoughts, as Freddie predicted, this could be the knock-out expected. But as the round progresses it became apparent that it was just a prelude to a systematic demolition of the welterweight champion. Pacquiao was cool in the first round even when Cotto was landing and pressuring Pacquaio with some crispy punches of his own. The smoke cleared and Miguel won this one.

But note that moments before the fight, Freddie Roach said, "In the first round of this fight, I'm going to have Manny make a statement. We're not going to give Cotto momentum, because if you give him momentum, he's going to get stronger. We're going to start quick. We're going to show him our power in the first round. We're going to hit him. We're not going to go in and just start swinging on him. We're going to do it smart. Pacquiao knows exactly what to do. We'll walk Cotto into a fight, because he follows. And when he follows, we're going to take advantage of that."

Again, Freddie Roach's declaration of an early first round assault was a deception. He could not yet afford to allow Manny to trade blows with Cotto because Miguel was yet not predictable. As Manny after the fight said, "Our plan was not to hurry, but to take our time. It was a hard fight tonight and I needed time to test his power." True enough, Cotto believed to have climbed the ring at 165 lbs, was visibly much bigger than 24 hours ago at the weigh in. And Cotto started strong. Manny indeed had to test the waters and if and when the knock-out comes, it pours.

In Round 2, Pacman started to make the 'statement of will & testament' that Roach was referring to – giving us spectators the flavour of how it was to be in the entire fight. With relentless ferocity now unfolded, the round was clearly Manny’s. At the end of the round, swelling of Cotto’s left eye this early becomes visible courtesy of Pacman’s Manila Ice.

Round 3: Cotto retaliated with blazing double left jabs followed by one-two combinations. Miguel, this time in the upperhand was winning the round but then, in the midst of a ferocious exchange, Pacquiao dropped Cotto with a hard right hand to the canvas midway in the third round. The knock down seemed not to badly hurt Miguel but he must have sampled the acidity of Pacman’s power. In some scary moments midway in the round, Pacquaio for the first time in his career employed a ‘rope-a-dope’ - a frightening move knowing of Cotto’s monster body blows. Later rounds would show a repeat of the ‘rope-a-dope’ and the boxing world then must have guessed that it must be a ruse to measure Miguel’s power. Or probably a psychological trap to make Cotto frustrated - realizing that his power was not enough.

The fourth canto was a repeat of Round 2 but with more furious power-packed exchanges. Again Pacman’s scary bait, the ‘rope-a-dope’ recurred and Cotto this time found his left hook target – Pacquiao’s right ear. But after Manny put Cotto on the canvas for the second time with a big half-left hook/half-uppercut reminiscent of Dela Hoya’s calibre 45 late in the fourth round, the Puerto Rican was never the same again. He must have savoured the best of Pacman’s early statements of accounts. At the end of the round, red leaks became visible in above and below Cotto’s right eye, while the left eye starting to bulge.

5th Round: Cotto sat on his corner bearing a void expression of a man lost in the dark. Joe Santiago, his trainer vigorously massaged his scalp to revive him. In this round the bait ‘rope-a-dope’ again resurfaced. Unbelievable, but the apparent confidence of Pacquiao doing the rope-a-dope must have been the off-shoot of Shawn Porter’s simulation and sparring during training. With Pacman’s lowered elbows blocking Cotto’s body sledgehammers and gloves covering Manny’s face, Cotto’s vaunted left hook again found its favourite target – the right ear of Pacman. One interesting revelation in this round was that the ensuing body blows seemed not to hurt Pacquiao but on the contrary, Pacman’s body shots appeared to injure Cotto. Cotto survived the fifth round by regressing to his defensive shell.

The champion’s competitiveness came last in Round 6 when the two fighters engaged in several furious back-and-forth flurries. But once again Pacquiao got the better of it – as a stinging left hand near the end of the round shook Cotto, sending him backwards once again. Cotto then retrogressed to cover his face in a child-like mode and later wrestled and pushed Pacquiao away before the Pacman could land another blow. By then the Filipino’s speed was taking a heavy toll on Cotto’s features. The crimson leaks now oozing with more pressure. Cotto in this round started to backpedal. At the end of the round, Cotto’s left shoulder collar bone started reddening.

Round 7 saw another flurry by the Pacman gobbling up the viscerals out of the Puerto Rican. Cotto was in the verge of falling down again, but as great warrior he was, his left jabs & right straights started working again sometimes tagging Pacquiao. With hands now lowered down, waning stamina must have creeped into Miguel’s system. Then Cotto started to run - switching over to survival mode. This time Pacman had penultimately re-sculptured Cotto’s face into pulp, his left collar bone getting redder. Knowing that Miguel never had backpedalled in his entire career, this is it! The end is near. "I knew when Cotto started backing up, the fight was over," Roach said.

Round 8 was very interesting! Better perhaps than Muhammad Ali’s shuffle, Cotto continued to run on his bicycle, this time faster. This must be the secret special package Cotto’s camp boasted before the fight. A rerun of the previous Round 7, Round 8 could have been the end had it been for the clinching. With Miguel’s body language indicated subjugate sequestration, ordinary mortals would have surrendered to submission in this round. But Cotto never gave up. What a warrior! But wait! This time, shiny and swollen fully, it was perhaps very inviting to taste a bite on the deliciously-looking lechon-like ear of the Pacman.

Cotto was battered again in the 9th Round by another combination that sent him in the verge of falling down for good. But the gallant Cotto briefly escaped but it soon happened again - no matter where Cotto went, Pacquiao seemed to be lording everywhere. There was no fire escape, no safe shelter, nowhere to turn to. Cotto had to bravely clinch the Filipino until the Pacific Tornado had blown over. With each crushing moments, Cotto’s face continued to bulge like a captured toad, his eyes now appearing little more than silhouettes.

Already spitting blood with nose bleeding, Cotto fought pathetically in the finishing rounds as he was just trying to survive. With blood oozing down his face, Pacquiao pounded Cotto almost at will. Frustrated over Cotto’s unabated running saw Pacquaio in Rounds 10 & 11 seemed to momentarily stop fighting. “Common, let’s fight to finish it”, Pacman must have said it. Cotto now becomes a pitiful sight. Cotto’s camp tried to stop the fight after the 11th round, but Cotto went back only to take more punishment before a final flurry along the ropes prompted referee Kenny Bayless to end it.

The fateful 12th round was the Tour De Force for Pacquiao when he threw 13-0 and 11-0 shut-out in overall connects & landed power shots respectively.

CALM AFTER THE STORM

What a man! Miguel Angel Cotto, the Puerto Rican was not an ordinary mortal. Despite the punishment, he was still standing. And while Pacman was kneeling down in his corner in prayer; Miguel Angel Cotto embraced Manny’s back in one of the most touching moments following a total defeat. “I’m still proud. I’ve fought everyone, the greatest welterweights, but Manny’s best boxer of all time,” Cotto said. The gesture earned the gentleman from Puerto Rico greatness in humility and respect amidst a crushing defeat.

On the other hand, "I took a lot of punches in this most demanding fight", admitted Manny after possessing Miguel. It goes without saying, Pacman had proven two things: He can walk through and withstand the big blows of the strongest welterweights and he has the power to stop real welterweight titans.

For the hard fight, Pacquiao earned a guaranteed minimum $13 million (possibly up to $ 18 million after PPV and the others), while Cotto got a minimum $7 million for the exhausting near-death job.

THE MEN BEHIND

Sun Tzu once preached that “if you know the enemy and you know yourself, you can win a thousand battles.” Freddie, the Coach, the Master Architect of destruction to Pacman’s opposition further believes that knowing the enemy’s habits both good & bad and using it against him guarantees victory just as well. Pacman’s recent victories are not just his. Freddie Roach as well, owns them.

Filipinized American Freddie Roach, Coach Par Excellence together with Strength Conditioning Guru, Colombian Alex Ariza and others worked as a team. “We look at all the aspects of conditioning – isometrics, diet, muscle build-up. It’s not the work of any one person. We’re all focused on Manny and we’re excited to be working with the world’s greatest fighter, pound for pound,” Ariza concluded.

"If you rest, you rust". "Your best is not good enough because others must be better". "We need to improve and learning knows no boundaries". "If you stop learning, then you start to die". That for sure in a nutshell, is the philosophy of Freddie Roach, the best boxing guru of all time.

A display of contrasting firepower will again radiate to engulf the boxing world. Soon to take place in the now favourite combat capital known as the desert city of Las Vegas, the big engagement is on November 15 (Philippine Time) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

And New Breed of Heroes, too - in a different kind of War! And excitement in the superlative degree is assured. Boxing will again be alive. With all the guaranteed thrill and adventure, it will surely be the biggest boxing event of the year! THE WBO WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD!

FIREPOWER draws divergent forebodings and wherefores amongst boxing pundits crazy on the sport. Visions, speculations and predictions all the time precede great battles as emotions fly high amidst the horror of the unknown – the terror on the aftermath from the blast of uncertainty...

I am one of those who fear for it... As a Filipino and together with my countless cohorts; we are looking up for the best that can happen in this episode. Following the country’s devastating natural misfortunes coming one after another, we need a respite and that breather must be a big hit - a huge win by Manny Pacquiao!

READING THE PACMAN

Manny Pacquiao, the Filipino, is the Tornado from the East. The Pacific Storm... so to speak.

Pacman, The Most Exciting Fighter of the Planet is The Pound-for-Pound Best in the World!

Now fighting for the Welterweight (147 lbs) Championship of the World, everyone knows the phenomenon of this once-upon-a-time 106 pounder. As never before imagined, Pacquaio had gone past David Diaz, Oscar Dela Hoya and Ricky Hatton in stunning & devastating subjugation over these big men. In these fights, multitudes of fight fans and boxing experts could not believe the conclusion of the perceived but in reality, conflicting mismatches. Now, the small Pinoy fights big – and every time he fights, boxing becomes alive again.

Pacman's cat-quick footwork will surely run around circles - bringing him to hit at will on Miguel’s facade, most likely in a much better performance from his previous Diaz, Dela Hoya and Hatton fights. With the dreaded ‘Manila Ice’ lurking in the background and the game-ending ‘Left Cross or Left Straight’, a knock-out in the first round is certainly threatening. As we knew, speed from all angles kills.

Freddie Roach, the Coach, in a complete departure from his earlier pronouncement that the fight would go the full distance, now is predicting a first round knock-out. He must have seen it, I believe. Or probably he sees a setback should the fight goes the distance. Or perhaps, Freddie, the shrink, the master battle psychologist, must have brought Cotto under his skin into the proverbial “Roach Trap”. Of course, that's Freddie's patented secret.

Whatever it is, with Freddie engineering the attack, the Pacman has the capability to do it. Cotto, they say, is hittable. Cotto is a slow starter and is perceived vulnerable in the early rounds... Cotto all the while is wide open for lead lefts and left counters.

Expectedly, Pacquiao’s offense must be in high gear from the beginning to end. And remember, although Pacman’s defense is his offense - but not anymore, because brand new sorties reminiscent of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do and Dumeniko Du Surigao’s Nimo Naranai Do are already in his arsenal as revealed in the Hatton fight. That certainly will give Miguel a pile of perflexing problems.

READING MIGUEL COTTO

TOUGHNESS: No doubt, Miguel Cotto is bigger and stronger – a good number of experts including his trainer, say so. Even Pacquiao himself acknowledged this disadvantage. Miguel is expected to climb the ring at 160 lbs while Pacquiao at 150 lbs or a difference of some 10 big poundage. Nonetheless, Cotto has excellent boxing skills which can't be ignored with more importantly, a finishing brutal knock-out power delivered in precise timing and uncanny accuracy most of the time in the middle and later rounds.

Note that the tough Puerto Rican Miguel Angel Cotto is no-ordinary. He is a smart-thinking fighter who can do adjustments while the game is being played. Versatile as he is, he can be a pressure brawler all night or a boxer as well, it depends on the situation. He also can act as a counter-puncher and a monster in his signature sledgehammer body attacks. And if he hits, he hits big!

The once mighty Ricky Hatton, to me, would have no chance with Miguel Cotto. Then history tells us that Miguel Cotto defeated the super-quick and strong Shane Mosley, the powerful Jab Judah, the sleek Joshua Clottey and the rest of real big guys all in their prime in this shark-infested welterweight division. Miguel had been wobbled a few times in his career but emerges as the victor all the time except for one. His only but contestable defeat was in the ‘hard(ened) hands’ of Antonio Margarito. And he could have defeated Oscar dela Hoya had he had the chance of meeting him in the ring.

HUNGER: This time hungrier than Manny, expect the best of Cotto during fight night. After the Margarito debacle and the ‘not-so-great’ performance against Joshua Clottey, he needs to show to the world that he is still the real deal in the division. Note that Cotto is for real at least for now. Cotto is still young. ‘His brutal artistry is both exciting and terrifying to watch. Every shot he throws is with bad intentions and Jab Judah’s face bore witness to the destructive trade that Cotto plied’ as one international boxing analyst beautifully put it.

But he needs to win this one, big! A defeat to Pacman especially via a 'knock-out' one will send him to retirement. His stock will nose-dive to the cellars and nobody will believe in him anymore. On the other hand, a win even by a split decision will propel him to the mega-buck clash with Pretty Boy Floyd. After all, win or lose with Mayweather will ensure him of an income not consumable in his whole lifetime.

SERIOUS TRAINING: Cotto needs stamina to fight the Pacman. In his fight with Joshua Clottey, it went through the distance - in fact, he got a split decision. In that fight, he seemed to have tired in the final rounds. With Antonio Margarito, at the 11th round, he was TKO’d when he was already tired. In his episode with Jab Judah, although he TKO’d Judah in the 11th round, he was visibly losing steam. One thing good in that fight was that Judah was also exhausted from the beatings of Miguel.

Now I understand why Miguel needs to train longer...

Self-determined, he took three months in a regimen of continuous, uninter-rupted training. Ahead of one month, he knew he has to slowly taper his weight down to the catch weight of 145 lbs. Reminiscence of the Dela Hoya lesson must have prompted him. As of the time of this writing, he had arrived at Las Vegas appearing trimmed and seemingly ready for war. But whether or not the fearsome figure is a manifestation of actual power or a weakness as a result of starvation will be interesting to watch. Cotto had been secretive in his training. He could have pulled punches as shown in his 'slow motion' work-outs for the media not to feast on. Hmmm...

ABILITY TO ABSORB PUNISHMENT: In his fights with the all-time great welterweights, backpedalling was never seen in his vocabulary but Miguel had always been focused & composed. As one notable sports writer said, “his relentless determination showed a seeming inability to take a single step backwards, and an apparent indifference to pain. Cotto’s relentlessness was simply too much for Judah; Cotto was all over him, never allowing him time to establish any sort of rhythm”.

I can now imagine, Miguel will do the same signature with Pacquaio. But then, can he endure, in the words of David Diaz, "the bladed twin fists of the Pacman"?

DIRTY TRICKS: In this year’s biggest blockbuster card, Cotto, 34-1, 27 KO’s, will defend his WBO welterweight title against Pacquiao, 49-3-2, 37 KO’s. Although Miguel Cotto is the champion, it’s Pacquaio, the challenger, who is the man to beat. The odds are showing so. But how can Miguel defeat Manny? To beat Pacman, Miguel must be in super-explosive physical condition and should not weather out until the last round. With three straight months of training, that no doubt I assumed has been achieved. Miguel's chances, to my mind, would be the famed sledgehammer left hooks to the body in the late rounds, granting he survives Manny's early on-slaughts.

But last, not the least - the dirty tricks! When Judah stunned Miguel with a lead left uppercut in the first round, Miguel resorted to burly low blows. And it happened again in the later rounds. I am not sure if he did it intentionally but many believe he is capable of doing such tricks. In a must-win situation, that brought me to the thought that ala Pretty Boy Floyd, Miguel will report for duty at 147 lbs. Even with a $ 2 million penalty, what’s important is the win! If that happens, I would not be surprised...

READING THE HOUSE OF CARDS

This time the Pacman is in his expedition to affix his seventh world championship diadem in seven weight divisions never before accomplished by any gladiator in the sport. Will history be kind to the Pacman?

Well, it has to be. Pacman is the all-time favourite in this match-up. Majority of the so-called connoisseurs are for Pacman’s triumph. I am for it. My friends of course are in it.

But Pacman’s recent fights are not without intrigues and hi-octane skepticisms. How much threshold can a diminitive Pacman gobble up & swallow more than he can chew in the heavier division? Note that David Diaz was just a lightweight. Oscar dela Hoya was not the same as who he was in his prime. Now 'you know' and we know that Ricky Hatton was over-rated and no way matching with Pacquaio’s level. Now at full welterweight, Miguel Cotto, the Champion could be the real deal.

But what goes up must come down. Pacquiao has been winning fights in a long streak. Pacquiao is undefeated in almost five years, on a 10-bout winnings over the biggest names in boxing and now on the verge of becoming a world champion in seven weight divisions. Gunning for his 50th win and 38th KO’s, now he might have forgotten how it is like to lose. He might be in the cloud nine of the false wisdom of invincibility. As I said in my previous article, he has already been on top of the world. Intoxicatingly powerful in such a mood, is Manny taking Cotto lightly? I hope not.

In these times, nobody can beat Pacquiao, except himself. But Manny’s legendary hard training work ethics is now becoming a sneaking conjecture. With interruptions, his training is perceived not as intense as his training for Diaz, Dela Hoya and the Hatton episodes. Inputting into the equation the now recurring tight shooting schedules for movies & commercials, and the perennial distractions - natural calamities or political or personal; observers quip that Manny must have again back to the old habit of just preparing himself up to the par or the skills of his opponent. Again, is Manny taking Cotto lightly? Is the Baguio stint working for his boxing’s best interest?

Roach’s pronouncements have always been in the positive. But Freddie must have known more and may have withheld some lapses which are not palatable to box-office sensibilities. Understandably, one of Freddie’s jobs is to hype the fight. To Manny’s ledger, Roach is just part of his payroll’s list, as I previously wrote. And Freddie has to keep this lucrative employment intact.

But latest reports are disturbing. Is Pacman’s house in danger of collapsing? I fear to imagine the distraction and the destruction of focus created by these recent scenes. Sleeping with the enemy, is Team Pacquiao's downfall creeping from within? Even Coach Par Excellence Freddie Roach himself and Conditioning Coach Alex Ariza now seem to be in the endangered species - candidates for purging later? Somebody’s undertones must have pierced some of the Boss’ ears. I hope it won’t get through, by the way...

I apologize, but that’s the words of careless whispers creeping in the grapevines of the boxing world! The world knows, even Buboy Fernandez, Pacman’s best friend, doesn’t like 'the guy named Michael Koncz'.

READING THE OUTCOME

It is my belief then that Pacquaio, the world's most exciting boxer, the singer, the product endorser, the model, the movie star, the politician - all rolled into one package, will prevail in this fight. It may not be easy but after breaking down Cotto in the earlier rounds, Pacquiao will win by a spectacular Knock-Out between the fifth and seventh rounds.

A devastating combo punctuated by a finale of left lead uppercuts will do it. And Miguel Angel Cotto will join the likes of Hatton in the Wonderland. I hope I’m not wrong this time.

What goes up, must come down? No, not this time. Probably, during the Mayweather encounter when Manny trains himself. If that happens, it's not bad for retirement, anyway...

NORTH CEBU HOSTS 10th REGION VII CONFERENCE

Bannered by the theme “Achieving Excellence Amidst Global Challenges”, the North Cebu Chapter of the INSTITUTE OF INTEGRATED ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS OF THE PHILIPPINES, INC., successfully hosted the 10th VISAYAS (REGION VII) CONFERENCE held on August 27-29, 2009 at the large and classy Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) of Mandaue City, Philippines.

The three-day event covered Technical Sessions, Product Presentations & Exhibitions as well as Sports & Competency Olympics. A total of some 520 attendees, amongst them are delegations from the ten chapters of Region 7, a significant number from Region 6 & Northern Mindanao, as well as graduating EE students, guests, suppliers, manufacturers’ representatives, benefactors, sponsors and product exhibitors. As one of the dynamic features of the conference, Exhibit Booths & Product Presentations showcasing latest technologies, new quality products, high-end tools & equipment in the electrical industry were given colors by some forty (40) notable companies from all over the country.

The Conference kicked off on August 22, 2009 at SMC Reception Center, a Saturday before the main event, where Competency-Based Olympics for graduating students and electrical practitioners alike vied for honors and cash prizes. A Golf Tournament featuring IIEE’s top golfers and four (4) pre-conference Technical Sessions followed on August 27.

In the morning of August 28, the main event formally opened with a ‘CABLE CUTTING CEREMONY’ by the Guest of Honor assisted by Engr. Noel T. Fernandez, Region 7 Governor and Engr. Arthur N. Escalante, National President, together with the 2009 IIEE Board of Governors. Following the Cable Cutting Rites saw the 'OPENING SALVO' – a digital presentation & interpretation of the association’s theme for 2009.

Gracing the Opening Ceremonies was the Guest of Honor & Keynote Speaker, Mr. JESUS 'JESS' N. ALCORDO, President of Cebu Energy Development Corporation. In his keynote speech, he cited the levels in the quest for global excellence where the role of the Institute as the excellent catalyst for change can only be found in an organization that is cohesive, active and intact. He emphasized that advancements in technology will lead to the promotion of the renewable energy in the country. “I believe Renewable Energy is the energy of the future and we should all work together to make it work for us. For the Philippines, this means building a robust industrial economy as pre-requisite so that it can meet the challenges of future impacts of climate change”. Citing statistics in Green House Gas emissions, he lamented “the politicization of science the result of which could further strain the country’s fragile economy in a costly exercise that contributes nothing for the desired end, Renewable Energy”.

The conference underscored several technical assemblies in the end-objective of strengthening the roles of the Filipino electrical engineers amidst recent global challenges.

The powerhouse of Speakers & Resource Persons in the Conference were notable electrical engineers of the IIEE as follows: Engrs. Roddy Penalosa, Art Evangelista, Jaime Mendoza, Francis Mapile, Ellsworth Lucero, Edward Mendoza, Art Lopez, Mel Fonollera, Willie Canizares, Pol Leoncio, Noel Fernandez, Doods Amora, Ely Silvosa, Jules Alcantara and Mandy Diaz.

Different product presentations were held by different companies such as Yokogawa (Philippines), Inc., P.T. Cerna Corporation, American Wire & Cables, PLDT Small & Medium Enterprise Group, RS Components, Philips Electronics & Lighting, IHI Turbo International, OMRON (Asia Pacific), Visayan Electric company, Inc., Phelps Dodge (Phils), and Philflex Wires & Cables Co.

For the first time in many years, the conference highlighted the attendance of graduating EE students from different colleges & universities of Cebu. Subjects of interest in their own technical sessions were the following: SUBSTATIONS & DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS IN ELECTRIC COOPERATIVES by Engr. Al Mahatani Lebumfacil, MOTOR POWER CIRCUITS by Engr. Ernie Abunda Jr., GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANTS IN THE VISAYAS by Engr. Mike Abrasaldo, GEOTHERMAL POWER DISPATCHING & MARSHALLING by Engr. Simeon Go, Jr., NON-DESTRUCTIVE MAINTENANCE TESTINGS by Engr. Roland Alcos and ELECTRICAL CODES & STANDARDS by Engr. Ely Silvosa. Such efforts by the organizers in reaching out the future electrical engineers were lauded as very much aligned with the IIEE National President’s agenda on enhancing the students’ competence and finally bridging the gap between the academe and the industry. The kick-off activities of the conference saw the students participating in the Competency Olympics with high spirits.

The evening of August 28 saw the Fellowship & Camaraderie Night at the plushy ambiance of CITY SPORTS CENTRE CEBU (CSCC) at the world-class Ayala Business Park. Featuring the renowned Cebu lechons and beer constantly flowing as punctuated by Live Wyre Band in the backdrop, the night was deemed short and even wanting for more.

As Guest Speaker for the Closing Ceremonies, Engr. Roddy N. Peñalosa, Chairman of the Board of Electrical Engineering cited the acceptance of the country’s educational system into the mainstream of international standards. He encouraged everyone to continue learning and be equipped with professional competence at any given time, all the time. He congratulated the host North Cebu Chapter, headed by its dedicated Chapter President, Engr. Willie Canizares and the Chapter officers for the successful & wonderful Regional Conference that is worthwhile for everyone to remember.
Engr. Noel T. Fernandez capped the three-day event with his short message, extending his warmest appreciation to all the guests, delegates, and people who work hard for the success of the event.

Just as the event started up with a Doxology & Opening Prayer, the Conference likewise ended properly with a spirited Closing Prayer.

At the end of the day, let us congratulate IIEE Region 7 Governor and the Host North Cebu Chapter for a Regional Conference that is truly an affair to remember!

COMPETENCY OLYMPICS - A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

August 22, 2009 saw the Competency Olympics of the 10th IIEE Regional Conference an astounding success!

Participated in by teams of electrical practitioners from Metro Cebu as well as graduating EE students from known colleges & universities, the Competency Olympics again showed the sharpness and the competitiveness of electrical technocrats in this part of the country.

As part of the kick-off activities of the Regional Conference, the ‘Olympics’ held at SMC Reception Center last Saturday was actually a quiz bowl showcasing competency-based competition the contents of which were related to the electrical world in real life. Participating teams for ‘student category’ were: USJR, UV I, UV I, CIT I, CIT II, UC, CSCST I and CSCST II. Participating teams for ‘electrical practitioners category' were: MEPZ, ASAP Engineering, Academe and TRANSCO Mactan.

Impressed on the show, Engr. Art Escalante, IIEE National President said in his inspirational speech, “This is the kind of quiz show that we want to implement nationwide. In practically all plants, manufacturing processes always change as a result of product changes where sets of process equipment are acquired from event to event resulting to motors that are connected here and there or transferred from one feeder circuit to another. Sooner or later, a plant electrical engineer wakes up one morning to realize that overload conditions had occurred. Fuses keep on blowing off or circuit breakers always tripping, to the point that such overloads result to conductor melting and a fault occurs!

In a large enterprise, reducing costs related to asset maintenance, repair, and ultimate replacement is at the top of management concerns. Downtime ultimately results not only in high repair costs but in customer dissatisfaction.

Maintenance includes methods to predict or diagnose problems in a piece of equipment based on trending of test results. These methods use non-intrusive testing (non-destructive) techniques to measure and evaluate equipment performance trends. It takes advantage of proven cause-symptom-effect relationships to predict the need for corrective action.

As the probability of faults is 24/7, how are large substations protected...?

How large is a “large substation”? Certainly, a 500 MVA, 500–115 kV Substation is large in terms of MVA rating, physical size and voltage levels. And there are a large number of them in the Middle East. How are these large substations protected? How do they differ from the smaller ones?

The protection provided for a power substation depends to some extent upon its size and rating, and will comprise in several forms each designed to provide the requisite degree of protection for different faults or abnormal voltage conditions. Normally, the larger the substation, the more it demands for more sophisticated protection system it so deserves.

Protection is a vital part of any electric power system - unnecessary during normal operation but very crucial during troubles, faults, and abnormal disturbances. As every system is subject to disturbances that should be removed quickly, the awareness of these abnormalities is necessary to arm suitable protection systems.

This paper therefore focuses on the fundamental technology in the application of protective devices and other forms of protection in large power substations virtually leading to its Testing and Commissioning.

Renewable Energy: The Need in These Troubled Times…

The 14th Philippine Congress has just enacted a Renewable Energy Law, designated as R.A. 9513, an Act promoting the development, utilization and commercialization of Renewable Energy (RE) Resources, and among other purposes. This law provides bundles of fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to foreign and local investors.

If vigorously and honestly implemented, R.A. 9513 will pave the way to a well developed and sustainable RE industry. Our country then achieving energy self-reliance will in effect reduce our dependency on imported fossil fuels. Employing RE for power generation, produces near–zero greenhouse gas emissions that impact in mitigating global warming, which is one of the aims of the Kyoto Protocol of which our country is a signatory.

In light of very encouraging events unfolding, the IIEE Advocacy Group for the awareness of IIEE Members, has assembled materials about wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, hydro and ocean energy as lecture topics to be presented during IIEE meetings and Regional Conferences.

In any facets of life, there is always what we call as “desired condition”. Standards have always been based on these “desired conditions” and performances are always seen as if systems are still brand new. It is often desired that capacity, process capability, efficiency and throughput must not degenerate in the entire lifetime of any power system. But the reality is that there is always an end to any lifetime and that the likelihood of deterioration increases with age.

IEEE defines maintenance as: “The act of preserving or keeping in existence those conditions that are necessary in order for equipment to operate as it was originally intended”. Thus, maintenance covers all activities undertaken to keep equipment, machineries, facilities and systems in a desired state or condition to include all other services done to return them back to that desired condition. Developing & setting up a workable maintenance management system involves a strategy that demands a high level of understanding and mastery of the various equipments as well as the technical characteristics of the systems involved. After all, no industry in business would survive with a faulted Substation.

So in the modern world, the levels of maintenance procedures are now seen as Condition Watch and Predictive Tests rather than tear-downs and repairs. But if it fails, it is important to understand the reason why. While all establishments dislike breakdowns; strategies centered on maintenance testings & monitoring, the use of various test equipment and the measurable parameters as well as the concepts on how to manage Substation Maintenance are lined-up in this presentation.

How are Over-Voltages in Substations Protected? Much more… Coordinated?

Transient over-voltages are attributed to natural phenomena and the inherent characteristics of the power system. Over-voltages may be generated by lightning and/or sudden changes in the power system caused by switching operations, short-circuits, load shedding, etc. The magnitude of these over-voltages may be above the allowable insulation thresholds and therefore need to be reduced and protected against.

Insulation Coordination is defined in ANSI C92.1-1982 as “the process of correlating the insulation strengths of electrical equipment with expected over-voltages and with the characteristics of surge protective devices.”

The presentation covers the fundamentals of insulation coordination and includes the discussion of traveling-wave behavior, insulation voltage withstand characteristics, arrester characteristics and ratings, arrester selection, arrester classes, and protective margins.

IEEE defines RELIABILITY as "the ability of a system or component to perform its required functions under stated conditions for a specified period of time." In an industrial plant scenario; it’s only a matter of pushing a button and a 6,000 kW motor kicks up to life - just like that! And nobody seems to be thinking about it. That in a sense is good reliability..! But if one is worrying about what could result if a button is activated (e.g., huge voltage dips or source trip-outs), then that’s another story… Thus, in practical terms, system reliability is simply: “There is power at sufficient capacity when needed, at any given time, all the time..!”

As there is no maintenance program that can make good the reliability of a poorly designed system, excellent design, operability and maintainability, all three pillars of system reliability, must henceforth be inputted in the conceptualization phase of an industrial power system. Additionally, whatever maintenance program developed by a plant is determined by the design of the system and the goals of the organization.

This presentation covers among others, the following: a) Pillars of Reliability, b) the Reliability Nines, c) the N + n Concepts, and d) Voltage Factor in Reliability.

It has been said that the continuity of operation in an industrial plant is as just as good as its electric system. Its value speaks for itself the instance power is interrupted during production days because of the so-called ‘faults’. The awareness of the magnitudes of fault currents in Substations cannot be well appreciated until a major or heavy fault occurs – after all, the protection system only comes to work during these abnormal times. But then, beyond a nice-looking system, any industrial complex or power distribution utilities must have its protection schemes live up to predictable expectations; while above all, the protective devices shall not disintegrate during events of faults and while performing its functions.

And faults are for real! According to experience, faults usually surface out after about five years operation of a brand-new electric system. Systems must be designed to anticipate these faults, thus the need for fault calculations - the end objective of which is to design a system sturdy enough to survive the disastrous effects of faults.

Failures or breakdowns in various components of a power system are either man-made, accidental or by natural causes such as those brought about by lightning, hurricane or from mere deterioration. But should the system fail, it must “fail well”.

This presentation shows how faults in Substations can be calculated manually while a check with EDSA Power-Analysis Software, will confirm the results.

Power System maintenance specifically on the substation power transformer has evolved from predictive to condition-based maintenance to assess the condition of the apparatuses in the system.

Most utilities in developed countries have adopted this type of methodology to save - by having to continually monitor what goes on with the apparatus and minimize downtime, loss of revenues and most of all prepare for spare parts needed during maintenance.

As most large energy users in the Philippines are aware by now, decades of government-ruled electric utility monopoly is coming to an end. The passing of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) of 2001, which marked the beginning of electricity deregulation, is changing forever the way electric power is delivered, purchased and used by energy customers.

Deregulation requires all electric utilities to share their transmission and distribution lines with other utilities and retail electricity suppliers. Started initially with wholesale competition, it is opening up the entire country’s electricity grid to the marketplace and encouraging retail competition by offering many new customer choice options.

The decision-making process of buying electric energy from the right source is a finite strategy that requires inside knowledge of how the utility, wholesale and retail businesses operate, and how electric power is applied by the user. Energy buyers will need to evaluate their choices on a new playing field, and from different perspectives, such as financial, contractual and benefits.

This presentation will attempt to enlighten the participants about the basics of deregulation and to better prepare respective organizations for negotiating favorable energy supply contracts. The advice contained in this presentation is designed as a guide on how to better manage utility costs and to compete in a deregulated marketplace that is sure to grow more competitive each day.

BLACK-OUT 101

How often do we want Black-Outs…?

“BLACK-OUT HITS THE VISAYAS. A 10-hour black-out swept the entire Visayas after the main power supply in Leyte tripped amid on-going maintenance work of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).” This was the headline of the Philippine Star, one Sunday, April 25, 2009.

Will Black-Out be a normal occurrence in the Visayas? How often do we want them?

The reliability of a power system is not a mystery. It can be maintained at the highest level we can expect. But of course, it comes with a cost, but more than that, it requires national attention and the will to implement. We cannot stop typhoons, lightning strikes, flood, random equipment failures, human errors and jellyfishes, but we can certainly decide how often we want to have cascading black-outs.

This paper will explain the basics of why black-out can or cannot be prevented; what happens if one line tripped and how can we minimize this.

How are Is - Limiters applied in Electrical Systems…?

Electrical engineers are faced with the challenges of integrating new generation into existing power systems, requiring the clearing of faults more quickly or finding an alternative to SF6 breakers.

Also, the rising demand for energy world-wide requires additional transformers and generators, and an increasing interconnection of the individual supply network, leading to the permissible short-circuit currents for the equipment being exceeded. Thus, parts of the equipment are being dynamically or thermally destroyed.

When replacement of existing switchgear and cable connections by new equipment with higher short-circuit strength is technically impossible or uneconomical for the user, the use of Is-limiters reduces the short-circuit current in new or expanded systems.

This presentation is about fault currents and the application of Is- Limiters and of Solid State Current Limiters.

The growth of the real estate market has initiated the rise in the development of business centers in the metropolis and key cities in the country. Real estate developers started the construction of high rise buildings during the construction boom of early eighties and have continued up to the present.

To cope with this trend, Electrical Engineers have to equip themselves with the technical know-how in the design of electrical system of a high rise modern building. Their work and participation in the planning, design and construction of a modern building cannot be underestimated or underscored.

We are anticipating the increase of high rise building not only in Metro Manila but also in other upcoming metropolitan cities in the country. With global concern on greenhouse effect ever increasing, buildings and all structures for that matter should seriously consider energy efficient design and the use of energy efficient devices and equipments. Also with the recent trend in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) call centers on 24 hours operation have change some parameters in our building design.

This paper intends to open up our Electrical Practitioners to the new concepts in designing high rise/modern buildings. It is also a prelude to more detailed and comprehensive seminars/lectures being prepared by IIEE for its members and associates.

Geothermal energy is an important renewable energy resource whose exploitation has relatively insignificant environmental impact. The use of geothermal energy has proven to be cost effective in many countries where geological, hydrological and geophysical conditions are favorable to the formation of geothermal systems.

The existence of geothermal systems is manifested by the presence of hot springs and /or fumaroles. Geothermal exploration serves the purpose of locating geothermal areas favorable to development and to finding sites within the system for drilling. Exploration includes geological mapping as well as geochemical and geophysical surveys. Geological mapping determine the rock and structural properties of the geothermal system.

Geochemical surveys predict subsurface temperatures to gain information on the origin and characteristics of the geothermal fluid as well as understand the subsurface flow directions. Geophysical surveys establish the variations in the physical properties of the geothermal system. Evaluation of information gathered from exploration, drilling the system to test the economic feasibility of the geothermal prospect ensues and later development of the geothermal field is pursued. Installation of the Power Plants and the Steam-field Facilities completes the system for power generation.

Geothermal exploitation for Power Supply contributed to national progress most specially to the host communities.

Most of our REEs and would be licensed EE professionals, desiring to pursue a life-long career in Electrical Engineering, would definitely want and therefore strive to attain the highest measurement of competence and recognition for a practicing EE professional – that of being conferred one of the most sought after license for any professional - that of being a Professional Electrical Engineer (PEE).

This paper is meant to give would be PEEs an insight into the expectations and preparations needed for the wannabes in going through the process, understanding the pre-qualifications for taking the licensure for PEE, thinking of a prospective topic for the thesis, preparation and doing the thesis proper, following Rule 14 of the IRR of RA No. 7920, going for the much awaited interview by a panel, and finally waiting with bated breath for the judgment at the end of the interview.

At the end of the day, the PEE wannabes attending this presentation will realize that it is NOT that difficult after all to be a PEE!

We had once a beautiful Earth - unique in the heavens, a wonderment solitary in the universe.

In the past, there were global crises – somehow the world survived. Today, not only have the oil prices soared to unprecedented heights but more seriously, the global economic meltdown. Now we are into resurging uncertainties… we need to sail again through an uncharted limbo! Sooner or later, we have to pay the bitter price.

Depleting natural resources, denuded forests, unabated CO2 emissions, pollutions of any sort, atmospheric denigration, ecological imbalance; all these sum up into scarcier food, dirtier air to breathe, the emergence of new mutant plagues and to top it all, Global Warming. With the global financial structure down to its knees, all these are just few of the Global Challenges --- the price we have to pay.

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE AMIDST GLOBAL CHALLENGES

The world is sick and we need to do something about it. Although the INSTITUTE OF INTEGRATED ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS OF THE PHILIPPINES (IIEE) can only do little in addressing these challenges, lest it is our compulsion to actively participate and contribute in mitigating the consequences of these crises - in effect, delaying the demise of the very life solely known in the cosmos. As an organization, we can position ourselves in several advocacies, foremost of them are as follows:

a) Efficiency in Generation, Transmission, Distribution and Utilization of Energy,

b) The Shift to Renewable & Clean Forms of Energy Sources;

c) Quick Adaptation & Application of Technology Changes;

d) The Drive to Mold Competent & Global Electrical Engineering Workforce.

But note that achieving excellence amidst these challenges starts from the hearts & minds of the organization’s members. IIEE-Region 7 believes that if & when the competencies embedded within the electrical engineer are made global; it would result to great wonders in terms of achieving the first three goals cited above.

As it has always been IIEE’s drive to provide avenues for its members’ growth, its desired objectives include strong but modern competencies & skills, innovativeness & creativity, quick adaptation to new technologies, ability to communicate, competence in management & human relations, and the never-ending desire for continuing professional development.

That is the essence of the 10th IIEE Region 7 Conference which will be held on August 27 - 29 at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC), Mandaue City.

Once upon a time in the far flung mountain barangay of Kanturatoy, there lived a farmer who had a 100 hectare land on which he patiently planted corn, corn for everybody within the vicinity, corn for all the livestocks raised in every household, corn for his keens and for his subsistence, too.

Harvest was bountiful for the first fifteen years.

The preceding years brought gloom and hunger while the corns saw a dwindling and dwindling produce as the earth became barren and dry like the wombs of a wilted woman. Except for the one and only one stalk of corn in the middle of the field that grew bigger and taller by the day like the proud and lofty trunk of a Philippine Lauaan Tree having then a base diameter of two meters. Indeed, it became a tree. Yes! A corn tree!

But without its ears. Without its fruits.

Thus, the painful conclusion of the owner to finally cut it off and end the anguish caused by the already unyielding land.

One day, the farmer took an axe and went to the middle of the field to cut the corn tree.

He struck on the trunk once, twice, thrice. The third strike took a good fist size chunk of the already wooded trunk and when he cleared the chips that barred the hole, there came a strange rumbling from within the bowels of the corn tree, a gurgling sound akin to the growling of a dragon from some subterranean tomb.

He leapt backward and took a stock of the white granules that seemed to ooze out of the hole… and then … Lo ! and Behold !

He suddenly shouted to the top of his voice: ‘Sacks ! Give me empty sacks ! Plenty of empty
Sacks !

For what came out from the severed trunk in endless fashion were grits, CORN GRITS already milled and polished to exact whiteness and size 12 of the true Cebuano corn !

Thus was born the Cebuano’s passion for corn and all those that goes with it.

THE DRAMA in that late morning of May 3 was akin to the principle of ambuscade executed in blinding rapidity as in that stealthy frontal interception that jarred and rattled the senses. The purpose of which is to inflect not only injury but mental anguish, dread and amazement to the recipient while evading at bay in anticipation for a fight another day.

Such was the climactic performance of the Pacman’s patented tactics of speed, precision and his capricious but fluid cadences in the square arena. A subtle resemblance of East Asia’s temperament during the 60’s: EXPLOSIVE and RESTLESS!

That, being contrasted on the other hand, with the somnambulant oscillations of the Hitman upon stumbling into dreamland – a replica of Western Europe after World War II: RUINED and DEVASTATED!

East met West.

Each in their sinister but mesmeric lethal dance of bloodlust for the win; exchanging blows like the clashing of minute swords of grass in the wind-blown verdant green, each fully clad and gleaming with the crimson dew of covetousness – leaping for the sky, reaching and both wanting for the sun…..

After the raucous din, only one man remained standing for the accolade. It was over. Brief. Clearcut. Neat. Swift as lightning.

Thus, was punctuated Europe’s best P4P fighter in that electrocuting flash of a pugilist’s dream: entering with as bang, departing in deafening silence.

THE UNSEEN WHYs and WHEREFOREs

After the Hitman had awakened from that sweet slumber initiated by that famous left hook, he allegedly said: ‘All right Coach, let’s get on with it! Let’s go for a jog before I floor that Pacman in the ring.’ The Coach answered: ‘What jog, the game is over’! Harharhar!

The simulated conversation is reflective of the human tendency to fall into that familiar trap labeled as the abnormal loss of memory. Amnesia. Forgetfulness. Oversight of the little things that when magnified should have considerably swayed the outcome of a projected goal.

Fatally overlooked by the Hitman was the wisdom of KNOWING. “It is in the knowing that we find resilience to cope with the demands of what we seek.” To vanquish one’s adversary, the doctrine of Ninjutsu stated among others: “Know your enemy. Become his friend and the other phases of his defeat will come in handy and in succession.”

Also forgotten for scrutiny was the psyche of the Pacman.

At an early age, the Pacman learned the rudiments of boxing in his frequent brawl while peddling his Pan de Sal, Newspaper and or shoe-shinning in the streets and alleyways of GenSan. This knowledge, if only pursued, would have given a hint of deducing that the Pacman was already a STREET FIGHTER prior to his involvement in the punching scene.

And the Hitman challenged this guy to a fracas of fists inside the ring! Who can deny him the privilege? It was like dispatching the proverbial turtle into the river! So, the ember flamed. And the splinters flew thereafter.

Another yarn has it that when a reporter asked why the fight was lost so quickly, the Hitman retorted: ‘Oh, Boy, how can you ever expect to win against a dude with eight fists?’ Harharhar!

Speed. Discipline. Concentration. Wisdom. Truthfulness in war or combat. These are the attributes of a good warrior. He must know how to incite fear, hate, anger, confusion and fright into the soul of the enemy. These are aspects of one attitude: INSECURITY. Feed this to the enemy in great dozes.

Failing to do this, one cannot win. One merely survives.

No matter how much the Hitman denies it, there was fear in his eyes upon climbing the stair to the ring. That was proven later when he bulldozed his way to test the water with a dubious thrust to the Pacman’’s side. There was also fear when he succumbed to the floor the first time while the second fall contrived revenge as reflected in the shock on his face. His body language confirmed all these and was magnified on the life-sized screen.

As long as there is fear, there will be defeat. This is a posture that invites revenge. And if one begins to think only of revenge, one’s body will be made weak by that obsession. One will cease to have options open until all strategy disappears, leaving only one thing: the thought of revenge.

The cause of the first knockdown, according to Doods, was reminiscent of Jeet Kune Do. Precisely right. He also chimed it was a shot from Nimo Naranai Do. Not wrong either. One or the other, they have that common mode of execution: Astounding SPEED.

Speed kills. Or maim. Hence the sealed fate of the Hitman in five minutes & fifty seconds. Whether it was JKD or NND that made it, was not the issue that hanged at bar.

It was Pacman’s fist that brought the house down along memory lane.

Dismissed, too, as irrelevant was the concentrating power of the Pacman. Unknown, perhaps, to the Hitman’s party, concentration plays an important role in any form of combat. This was one of Pacman’s aces: “To meet the enemy with the mind settled on that spot where one’s offence must constantly hammer the adversary into oblivion.”

On the contrary, the Hitman’s intentions were clearly telegraphed by his body and eye movements prompting the other party to anticipate in the form of mind-reading and intercept the blows prior to being consummated. Thus, the Jeet Kune Do slash in the first salvo.

And that was the CHIN of the matter. The LOWER JAW in another.

Alien to the Western mind is the almost fanatical preoccupation of the Pacman to indulge in moments of SILENCE in his Mass Offering a day before the fight and again kneeling in STILLNESS on his corner prior to the action. Why is this?

Kenjutsu affirms: “Combat is a very deep SILENCE attacked. Just as man can create silence, so does the human psyche: thought. Without silence, thought is impossible. Without thought, strategy cannot be formulated. Unless one actively seeks out the SILENCE in the midst of combat he cannot attain victory. He can only be there as witness to his own defeat.”

These intangibles, basically regarded as negligible, became in fact the fatalistic factors pushing the Hitman into his own pit. Were you to agree or not, that is the infallible palindromic message etched on the mirror on the wall.

BODY LANGUAGE

While the Pacman almost always wear that enigmatic grin before his fights, the body speaks a tune rather contrary whenever blows are inflicted unto him. Albeit the Pacman knowing this or not, is clearly manifested everytime he retaliates to the opponent.

The language being Latin and written as the lead of this article, it is herein translated into English meaning thus:

“No one attacks me with impunity.”

That, is the tenet of the warrior under stress. That, also is the truth of the moment. More or less.

THE FINAL CHAPTER

From the edges of the earth to the center of the ring, the East collided with the West and three explosions shook the world..!

Two volcanic eruptions in the first; followed by the exclamatory climax in the second round.

Three knockdowns: SHOCK, AWE and HORROR - yes, what else could it be?

The first bomb sent shockwaves. The second delivered a nerve-breaking awe and the last one detonated sheer horror. Shock, Awe & Horror to the 25,000 adoring Hattonites who trooped to Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena and to the millions around the world watching their TV screens. On the other hand, romping in celebration were deafening roars of pandemic approval on the side of the Pacmanites - me and my cohorts included!

The first knock-down came from a right hook. It looked like a counterpunch but it wasn’t. It was a looping right hand from Pacquiao that landed right on the dot just as Hatton went for a left of his own. Reminiscent of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, it was more of a shot from Nimo Naranai Do that only the wisdoms of Freddie Roach and Dumineko du Surigao can explicate.

The second knock-down came from Pacman’s patented combinations punctuated by a left straight penultimate finale. As expectators, we had seen it several times in previous Pacman fights. But live at the center of the ring, with so much power, speed and fluidity, there was no way Ricky saw it.

Short, swift and easy. It’s all over in 5 minutes & 59 seconds.

HATTON IN TWO ROUNDS

Yet, the Mancunian pride is a double edged sword. It can drive one to great heights or drive one to the point of near death in the pursuit of victory.

Hatton chose the latter. If this was what death must be like, then so be it. The eyes in his tiger inside were still sharp & piercing – still determined! Ricky hopped into the center of the ring seemingly re-energized as the second round bell rang.

But all of a sudden, Hatton was gone. A final perfect left hook delivered in surgical brutality to the side of the chin sent Hatton seemingly lifted sideward. Unconscious even before hitting the canvas at the closing of the second round, the crystal-eyed and motionless Mancunian Hitman appeared to have dreamt of flashes of morbid hallucinations. And as the bile slowly creeped inside Ricky’s system, the deeper, the more infectious the pain was. Unmoving, eyes open but unseeing, Ricky must have seen himself floating in "Hatton Wonderland".

Indeed, Pacquiao mercilessly ended Hatton’s reign as Ring Magazine’s light welterweight champ. “It was a hard punch,” said Pacquiao. “I didn’t think he would get up.” Truly, Hatton did not get up—yes, for several minutes. Lying in partial life flat on his back, the breathing was painful and hard, his senses out of sync.

Referee Kenny Bayless knew he need not count. He knew it was over way back in the first round. The second round was just bonus.

Before this fight, Hatton came in his prime with a record of 45-1 with 32 KO’s and he had never lost in his 140 pound territory. His only defeat was when he ventured into higher weight division to mix it up with Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather Jr. Of course, he lost through a 10-round TKO to the pound-for-pound great PBF, but then the boxing world was so kind to excuse him, much less, history forgetting of this defeat.

Days before the fight, the match promised of an electrifying war between two most exciting warriors of the modern world. Hatton was perceived to have found his match in the equally aggressive & volume punching Pacquiao - the challenger to his lineal IBO and Ring Magazine belts. On the other hand, Hatton wanted so badly Pacman’s title as the World's No. 1 Pound for Pound fighter. Electrifyingly before the fight, he declared to shock the world.

The world was indeed shocked! But to Pacman’s favour. Then I joined with the sea of all fellow Filipinos in the swelling of the national pride as we were all part ingredient of a nation charmed of Pacquiao’s triumphs again and again!

And it was bitter reality as Hatton Promotions CEO Garret Williams in apparent respect to the Pacman, summed it up, “Ricky is desperately sorry to all his fans. Manny Pacquiao is the best fighter, possibly of all time there’s no shame in losing to somebody like that.”

SURPRISE

In the shortness of the fight, there’s not much to say in this article. The fight was self-explanatory as it was not complicated. Simply put, Hatton was no match to the tornado from the East.

But I could not have dreamt of a more spectacular outcome, for I for one was surprised how it came so easily. I expected peaks and valleys as the fight would go on, I mean the excitement, the electricity.

In my last article, I was looking at a knock-out in the later rounds. Ricky Hatton, known for his durability and being much fresher than Oscar Dela Hoya, the Hitman needed to be softened up until the late rounds where the knock-out would be ripe.

But with the Pacman as opponent, the actual fight seemed to expose that Hatton could have been thought of as a bum. Had it not been for his impressive credentials, Hatton would have not belonged to the class of the Pacman. Don't get me wrong. Ricky is one of the greatest fighters in the modern world. But Manny is just much better.

So easy, so swift, so clinical – that’s how dramatically Manny dismantled Hatton.

In retrospect, David Diaz looked good in his ninth round TKO loss to Pacman. Oscar Dela Hoya was much better in his own eight round combat with the Pacman. And Pretty Boy Floyd’s performance over Hatton now appears to be mediocre.

Manny Pacquiao himself admitted he was surprised by the ease of his win over Ricky Hatton. Hatton used to clinch the Pacman two times in every thirty seconds as part of his roughhousing strategy but then, the hittable Hitman from Manchester got hit – 57.5% percent of the time. In fact, he only connected 18 out of his 78 punches. Pacquiao on the other hand, connected 73 out of 127. It means that the Hitman was hittable in a frequency of 12.2 blasts per minute while the eely Pacman absorbs only 3 punches per minute, in a lopsided ratio of 4 hits to 1.

THE COACH ROACH FACTOR

But then before the fight, Freddie Roach said that this epic match has the makings of a brand new offering never before seen by boxing fans. “The match-up is the best kind of fight ever to be made”, Freddie as quoted. Before the match, Freddie Roach, the Coach, predicted a knockout in three, Pacman made it shorter in two, through the so-called "ROACH TRAP", which Freddie himself devised.

“I knew it was over,” said Roach. “Ricky fights the same way over and over. He doesn’t have the ability to adjust. I watched the tapes over and over the last few months. I know him as well as I know my fighters.”

“Every time he throws the left hook and cocks it, he is wide open for the right hook from the southpaw stance,” Roach explained. “We worked on that every day in the gym and it just worked beautifully.”

“Manny is unbelievable, he performed the gameplan flawlessly,” said Roach at the press conference. “I’m the best trainer in the world because I have the best fighter in the world.”

Needless to say, Pacman's victory is sweetest to a coach who himself was involved in a bout with the trainer at the other side of the fence. After all that’s said and done, Freddie Roach, the Hall of Famer, is the best boxing guru the world has ever known.

THE PACMAN Vs. THE HITMAN

(PART 1)

THE EAST MEETS THE WEST

The confrontation is still sneaking weeks away, but the brewing tension of a fierce combat smells irresistibly towards one hell of a war. There’ll be non-stop action. There will be blood flowing - lots of them, and someone will fall down.

The Tag: PACQUIAO Vs. HATTON

On May 3 (Manila Time), The Pacman and The Hitman would come to clash a serious business, and everyone expects it.

Big Fames - Big Fight! The names alone are enough to make mouths water.

To their callings, they both have machine guns; and big guns, too. All said and done, each protagonist promised to knock the other out in three rounds!

This time, no more trash tales of ‘aged’, ‘washed-up’, ‘dehydrated’ or ‘passé’ characters... Both are in their prime at 30.

In the ensuing fracas, surely brutal as they come, both fighters are presaged to be tenacious, unyielding and potent. Both are forward-moving, volume-punching aggressors - capable in blasting their opponents for good. Hatton has 32 knock-outs, Manny has 36; nothing to downplay on either sides.

And when the EAST collides with the WEST, it will be nuclear fission in overwhelming proportions! The explosion must be much more deafening than Pacquiao-Dela Hoya and Hatton-Mayweather episodes, combined!

Shock & Awe! How else could it be?

THE EQUATION

Manny has 48 fights in his resume against the demanding future Hall-of-Fame brawlers like Barrera, Morales, Marquez, and more recently, David Diaz and Oscar de la Hoya among others.

But except for Dela Hoya, Pacman’s victories were over small men, by welterweight standards...

On the other hand, Ricky’s numbers boast of 45 bouts against the likes of Urango, Castillo, and Collazo; punctuated with a spectacular victory over the once invincible Kostya Tszyu, and having lost only once to the undefeated pound-for-pound great, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

It goes without saying, Hattons’s lion dens, are all the time, BIG men.

Nevertheless, Ricky is for sure the stronger and bigger fighter, and at 140, he’s fighting at his best weight where he is the Boss. Manny had once tested the density of the 147 pound waters, but boxing skeptics said, “it was a fluke for the one he faced was an aged man who can’t pull the trigger anymore”.

Unlike the ‘recent’ Oscar Dela Hoya, the Hitman Hatton, is a monster in the inside. Aside from his natural powers, “the Hitman is deadly, very capable in using his shoulders, elbows, hips, and torso to set up awesome upper cuts and hooks to the body, while throwing additional shots from unorthodox angles”, as one notable sportswriter wrote.

Indeed, the Hitman, reportedly packs close to a half-ton punching power. And he is not sluggish either. Hatton's punch was clocked in at 32 mph or 51 kph. In a left hook that had floored 32 of his 45 opponents, it means a speed of 46.5 ft per second. This translates to 43 milliseconds (0.043 sec) of near 1,000 lbs of dynamic force of an uppercut to reach a target of two feet distance.

THE FIGHT PLANS

But then, mentally and physically, Hatton and Pacquiao will report for duty prepared with strategic fight plans.

And both fighters have the trade’s finest coaches in their respective corners. Freddie Roach, who has honed Pacquiao into a perpetual punching machine, is confident that Hatton would only last for three short rounds.

But Ricky has the treasure of Floyd Mayweather Sr. in his corner. An astute, deep-rooted boxing shaman, Trainer Mayweather Sr. is predicting that the “Hitman will squash the Pacman like an egg.”

“Freddie, the joke coach Roach, is counting his Easter chickens before they hatch, but there will be no resurrection in the ring for him that night,” said the outspoken trainer.

So then, not only that the two most exciting boxers in the planet will execute toe-to-toe rumba; certainly the world’s two best trainers in Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Freddie Roach are doing the same in their respective corners.

This makes this fight a lot more electrifying. The verbal fisticuffs had already started and more are coming.

“I'm in the Hall of Fame. He's not. I have 23 world champions, he has only one. All his were already champions when he took them over. He has never trained his son. Roger, his brother, did”, said Roach in apparent response to Trainer Mayweather’s offensive poetries.

Expect then that relentless pressure and non-stop assaults showcasing the uppercuts and hooks to the body of Pacman will devour the better part of the evening. Hatton had done it successfully many times before. He will do the same on May 3. Remember, Hatton was able to bring the fight to Mayweather in the early rounds, making the Pretty Boy Floyd uncomfortable at the first half of the fight. That, in itself was quantum performance a few mortals dare to replicate.

Undoubtedly, Ricky Hatton, the stronger fighter, will bring the fight on to Pacquiao right after the opening bell. Forward marching, occasionally weaving his head but with little use of lateral movements, he will slog to grab the Pacman, swarm him, and intimidate him inside the ring. That’s the shortest route to the heavy bombs aimed at Pacquiao’s body and later the concluding hard right to the head.

His mission will be an utter knockout in the early rounds. It has to be quick and the pound-for-pound title will be his.

Expectedly, Hatton will throw his newly mastered decoys, the double jabs followed by intense combinations. Sort of Pacman’s own medicines, the Briton will then swing to the left - that will place him away from Manny’s vaunted left straight and oblige the Filipino to use his right hook.

Pacman’s right hook? Nah! That’s Mayweather Sr’s homework. Hatton has rehearsed it several times in the gym.

"To stand in front of Ricky, is not our plan. I expect Ricky to be better than Oscar was, at this point. He is younger, fresher. Ricky gets hit - he wants to fight. Manny gets hit - he wants to fight. They revert back to what they do best. If you hit Manny, he claps his hands together and away he goes." Freddie must have something diversified in his mind and he must have more tricks in his sleeves.

On the other hand, Pacman’s signatures of power and speed are foreshadowed to redeem himself from the obvious disadvantage. Like his latest fight, Manny would be an elusive target to hit. Weaving, bobbing and circling, Pacman will hit his targets at will. His tornadoic speed is not on one punch alone but from two-fisted multiple combos from multiple angles all set up from the speedy, springy legs. Shock and Awe! That’s what he did to Oscar Dela Hoya.

Then, a gory of blood will ooze. Smothering, confusing and denying his opponent air to breathe, that’s how the Pacman dismantles the warrior instincts from his opponent’s wits.

Horror will then creep in slowly and the will to fight effaced... maybe or maybe not.

THE VISION OF THE FIGHT

Let’s go fast forward...

Eight rounds had been history. The Pacmanites are already romping in celebration. In the span of eight chapters, Ricky Hatton only won two marginal rounds. Hatton had been down to the canvas a couple of times - his face now a bloody pulp. Score: 78 - 72 for the Pacman!

Pacquiao on the other hand, just like his bout with Oscar – except for a few blisters, is unscathed. As Freddie tells him, it’s now a matter of the finishing touches - he is now ready to punctuate a smashing victory.

The bell rings and as if the dreaded cluster bombs falling from the sky, Pacquiao storms at Hatton with a series of blinding combinations. The Hitman akin to the previous rounds, opts to eat lots of leather, it doesn’t matter anyway. Manny is winning...

As the Pacman bobs and weaves; Hatton fires his powerful darts, hitting air... again and again.

Then, at the spur of the moment, the two trade the bests of their body shots. Pak, pak, pak, bog, bog! Machine guns and big guns too! “So what if you are a master body destroyer? I have same tools that I want you to taste!” The Pacman must have that frame of mind at the moment.

All of a sudden, The Hitman clinches The Pacman, and as Hatton bulldozes forward, Pacquiao backpedals to the ropes, to a corner of the squared ring. This is what Ricky is waiting for.

Then, The Hitman stoops his whole configuration down and positions himself to deliver a huge half-ton stab on Pacquiao’s solar plexus.

Kaboom! The Pacman plunges flat on the canvas face down – panting, eyes seemingly crossed, the breathing was painful.

One big hit..., unseen, swift, heavy...!

The Pacmanites, the Hattonites, the Referee, Freddie Roach and even the Hitman himself are stunned, and for a moment all awed, hypnotized. The announcers are shocked and so is the crowd. The Pacmanites - the Filipinos at the venue and those watching on TV’s are shaken, visibly.

The Hattonites on the other hand, realizing imminent victory of their idol, roar in pandemic approval.

Shocked, Awed, Horrified! “Pacquiao is down! Manny’s hurt!” The TV commentators shout.

Meanwhile, as the bile creeps inside Pacman’s system, the deeper, the more infectious the pain is.

Down on the canvas, Manny’s visions roll, he closes his eyes. Then shadows of the past flash back into the soaring panorama. He sees the sight of Torrecampo did the same to him, many years past. Then he sees the silhouettes of his triumphs over Barrera, Morales, Marquez, Diaz, Dela Hoya and the grandeur moments while supplicated in the gorge of the all-time superstars. He then sees faces. Faces of his countrymen, horrified, looking at him and in their eyes he sees but flickers of paling trust and valour.

As his senses involuntarily jerking in partial life, he hears the referee yelling, “six…seven”; somehow floating on the clouds, half groggy, he gets up at the count of eight.

Then the bell rings. Thanks!

In his corner, efforts are frantically tried to revive him.

In his stool, Manny’s thoughts travel into realms of truths. He has been winning fights in a long streak. Now, he has forgotten how it is like to lose. He sees defeat in front of him beckoning into the emptiness of a black hole. Humbly, “I’m losing the war...”, he admits. It pains hard, he wants to sleep and forget. For forgetting even momentarily, is healing to the soul.

Hazily, Pacman looks at Hatton across the ring. There is no miracle. Hatton’s face still pulp. He too, is struggling for dear life. He closes his eyes and calls on the powers above. He had done this before, and he is always heard. With all humility, he implores it again.

He sees a glimpse of the crowd cheering him – same faces of his countrymen, the good men, the bad men, the politicians of all sorts included, the rich, the poor; all extending their arms begging him for a life to be lived. Then he hears sounds resonating agreeably to the ears – pleasingly getting louder and louder in unison. Then he sees the outlines of the Filipino people some 95 million of them, all over the world, praying and saying:

“We need your victory Manny, at least for this moment that we are one”...

Suddenly, a gush of hope and the will for life...!

He again looks straight to Hatton, and tells Freddie and Buboy, “I must win! This is my moment of truth. That is why I’m here. This is for my country!”

The bell rings signalling the tenth canto, a new Pacman hops to meet Hatton in the middle. Never mind that lucky unseen punch, because it never comes again.

Pacquiao hits Hatton real hard. With an assault so stunning no one has ever imagined, in a rapidity no one has ever seen..., and with a strange power mysterious to many, he attacks the Hitman like a swarm of killer bees out for a kill.

As the dust settles... one minute in Round 10, IT’S ALL OVER!

Ricky never gets up as the Hattonites, this time in SHOCK, AWE & HORROR.
